MCU Spider-Man Star Reveals That He Has Never Met Tom Holland

Spider-Man star J.K. Simmons, who has been around since the very beginning of the franchise, has never met Tom Holland.

Simmons originally played the iconic Daily Bugle editor, J. Jonah Jameson, in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. The actor made his MCU debut as the journalist in the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home and reprised the role two years later in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Ahead of the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Simmons revealed some interesting information during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Although the actor has played the grumpy editor-in-chief of the Daily Bugle in both Tobey Maguire and Holland’s Spider-Man films, he revealed that he and the latter have never met one another in person.

While the actor portrays the same character, the MCU iteration is a multiversal variant of Jameson. However, this incarnation never hired Peter Parker as a photographer as he did in Maguire’s movies. As a result, he and Holland’s Spider-Man have never actually shared a scene, so he never got the opportunity to meet the star.

Additionally, Simmons spoke more in depth about his return as Jameson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how everything came together with very little notice. According to the actor, the studio reached out at the last minute about making a brief appearance, and within days he was filming the scene in an executive’s office because no set had been built.

The actor jokingly said that the rushed production is probably why the MCU version of his character is bald. He explained that the idea to include the editor came while Spider-Man: Far From Home was already very deep into post-production, and his inclusion was a spur of the moment decision.

In the third iteration, when that came along, to do a little sort of cameo reprise, that was a complete shock and a very last minute decision. Which I still think is why JJJ doesn’t have hair in the Tom Holland Spider-Man universe, because they literally called my agent, we had a meeting the next day, and it was like a day or two later I was shooting in somebody’s office, some executive’s office on the lot because there was no set. They were well into editing the film when they went, ‘What if we stuck a little JJJ in here?'”

Jameson was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The character first appeared in 1983’s The Amazing Spider-Man #1. Ever since his debut, he has been known for running smear campaigns against the superhero. Jameson famously refers to Spider-Man as a menace and overall public nuisance. However, despite the two not liking each other, they have reluctantly teamed up with each other over the years.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released in theaters on July 31, 2026. All of the Holland-led Spider-Man films and Maguire’s original trilogy can be streamed on Disney+.
