The DC Universe‘s next movie is guaranteed to be a box office win in some capacity for the franchise unless the movie manages to make less than half of Supergirl‘s already relatively low current earnings, based on reports about its budget. Superman becoming 2025’s 10th highest-earning movie set up a promising start for the DC Universe timeline, which does appear to have helped balance out the more mixed results of Supergirl in 2026.
Despite hopes that Supergirl would continue to set up the DCU in dramatic fashion by mirroring her cousin’s solo movie debut success, the 2026 sci-fi superhero adventure has garnered a far lower worldwide box office thus far, currently sitting at a $100 million total versus the 2025 film’s $618 million results, which has been a far lower amount than many previous estimations believed the film would make upon its debut.
While there’s still time left for Supergirl to gain a little more on its overall worldwide box office total, it’s interesting to note that Supergirl‘s current financial results would make the DCU’s next movie a success by conventional box office standards, given its own reported budget is far lower than Supergirl‘s budget of around $170 million.
Clayface’s Reported Budget Means Its Box Office Requirements Are Far Lower
Though there are hopes for Clayface‘s box office to make far, far more than its budget, it’s worth noting that the lower box office result Supergirl has right now – that of a reported $100 million (as per The Numbers) – would still be over two times Clayface‘s reported budget, which is currently said to be around $40 million (via The Hollywood Reporter).
With the rule of thumb often used for successful box office results being that a film needs to make 2.5 times its budget, this would mean Clayface could make Supergirl‘s current box office result and be classified as an overall financial net win for the franchise. Indeed, the movie only theoretically needs to make half of this to exceed its own budget, which could itself be classified as a win of sorts while the franchise is still establishing itself and given how experimental Clayface is in some regards.
Ultimately, Clayface‘s lower reported budget gives the DCU far more room to allow it to experiment with what kind of comicbook movie audiences will go to see, and what they expect from the DC Universe in terms of the different kinds of offerings it will provide over the course of its run.
Clayface’s Reported Budget Is A Promising Sign For The DC Universe’s Future
The superhero genre has become increasingly synonymous with colossal film budgets over the years, thanks to the CGI requirements these films often demand, and the larger-than-life events within them also often coming with a substantial fiscal cost. This isn’t strictly a bad thing, but the consistency with which superhero movie budgets have risen has meant these films need to make more and more in order to be financial successes or even balance out their budgets, which inherently comes with a side of extra risk.
Clayface having one of the lowest reported budgets in recent history thus bodes well for both the film itself and the DCU more broadly speaking. There’s a clear willingness to break with tradition in this sense, which seems a wise decision given one of the biggest DC movie hits in recent history was that of Joker, which made over $1 billion on a reported budget of between $50-70 million (as per The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline).
There’s an inherent magic that can be pulled off when a comicbook movie visibly goes all out with its movie story in a way that is sure to cost a pretty penny. However, the current ecosystem for superhero films – wherein major box office success isn’t as guaranteed as in years prior – does mean films like the DC Universe‘s Clayface have an advantage, since they can build fiscal results that can help a franchise blossom while ensuring any risks taken aren’t potentially franchise-ruining ones if the film isn’t a major hit.
