God Of War Trilogy Remake Officially Getting One Massive Controversial Change

God of War has hoisted itself up as one of the most special and prolific PlayStation first-party IPs, with Kratos being one of its most highly celebrated franchise mascots for more than two decades. The God of War franchise obviously isn’t afraid of the idea that a new playable protagonist could lead it: God of War Ragnarök teased that the torch will eventually be passed to Kratos’ son, Atreus, for example, and a game led by Kratos’ wife, Faye/Laufey, was recently revealed.

That said, we definitely have not seen the last of God of War’s Kratos. He appeared only recently in God of War Sons of Sparta, the prequel God of War Metroidvania game, and will be featured as a playable protagonist once again when Santa Monica revisits the franchise’s nostalgic Greek era in the God of War Trilogy Remake, which fans are understandably concerned about.

PlayStation’s all-digital future is proposed to begin by January 2028, meaning that any games releasing in 2028 and onward will consequently not have discs produced, nor a genuine physical release. Because it’s unlikely that both God of War Laufey and the God of War Trilogy Remake will launch in 2027, the natural conclusion that GAMINGbible and everyone else have come to is that the God of War Trilogy Remake will be released in 2028 at the absolute earliest, and that’d mean it will not have a physical copy.

Had it not been confirmed to be in early stages of development, it wouldn’t be a huge nervous-system shock if the God of War Trilogy Remake launched next year. God of War Sons of Sparta was shadow-dropped during the February 2026 PlayStation State of Play showcase, and God of War Laufey, though it doesn’t yet have an official release window, is expected to be released in early 2027.

Sadly, even if this demonstrates that Santa Monica is refusing to announce many of its games until they are already near completion, much less their desired launch windows, this is not the case for the God of War Trilogy Remake. Per the official PlayStation.Blog, Santa Monica communications director Grace Orlady has confirmed that the God of War Trilogy Remake won’t be arriving any time soon:

This project is still very early in development, so we ask for your patience as it will be a while before anything else can be shared.”

This will likely be another classic case of a game being announced years before it actually launches. Thankfully, God of War fans will at least have God of War Laufey to look forward to in the near future, surely, and the Trilogy Remake may realistically have been swept under a rug after being announced at the same State of Play where God of War Sons of Sparta appeared and shadow-dropped (and with that announcement merely containing an atmospheric title card, anyway).
