Cult Hannibal Adaptation That Inspired CBS’ 24-Year Crime Franchise Is Officially Returning With Exciting New Release

The Hannibal film Manhunter, which inspired the long-running CSI franchise, is about to get a brand-new theatrical release 40 years later.

After author Thomas Harris wrote the novel Red Dragon in 1981, which introduced iconic characters like Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham, it was adapted for the big screen as Manhunter. Thomas then continued his series with The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal and Hannibal Rising, all of which were eventually turned into movies and the NBC TV show Hannibal.

The adaptation that started it all, though, is returning to theaters this summer, according to Collider. Manhunter, which originally debuted in 1986, will be released with a restored 4K version beginning July 24 in select theaters, first at IFC Center in New York, New York; Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Los Angeles, California; and SBIFF Film Center in Santa Barbara, California.

Throughout the summer and early fall, Michael Mann’s Manhunter: The Final Cut, as this new version is being called, will then have screenings in Seattle, Washington; Ojai, California; Cleveland, Ohio; Portland, Oregon; Denver, Colorado; Dallas, Texas; Somerville, Massachusetts; Kansas City, Missouri; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Charlotte, North Carolina; and New Orleans, Louisiana.

Alongside this announcement, Rialto Pictures released a trailer for the restored 4K version of the film, which promises to be director Michael Mann’s “definitive vision” of Manhunter. The Final Cut is not only being restored in 4K and getting a revised color grading, but it will also include dialogue not heard in the original theatrical edition.

Manhunter stars William Petersen as FBI Agent Will Graham, who comes out of retirement to help the agency find a serial killer. He has no choice but to seek out the infamous Dr. Hannibal Lecter (spelled as Lecktor in Manhunter) in prison after their previous run-in with each other.

Along with Petersen, the movie also stars Brian Cox, Tom Noonan, Dennis Farina, Kim Greist, Joan Allen and Stephen Lang. Mann, who went on to helm movies like The Last of the Mohicans, Heat, Ali, Miami Vice and Ferrari after this, directed Manhunter and wrote the script.

Upon its release in theaters, Manhunter failed to make an impact at the box office, grossing only $8.6 million, but has a Certified Fresh score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Fourteen years after Manhunter was released, Petersen was cast as Gil Grissom in the hugely popular series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, which aired for 15 seasons and launched the spinoffs CSI: Miami, CSI: NY, CSI: Cyber and CSI: Vegas.

The Hannibal franchise continued after Manhunter, as more of Harris’ books were adapted for the screen. The most iconic adaptation was 1991’s The Silence of the Lambs with Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster; both actors won Oscars for their performances as Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling, respectively.

While there’s been talk in recent years of reviving the NBC series Hannibal, nothing has materialized yet. So until there’s movement on that front, fans can revisit Manhunter this summer and fall.

Michael Mann’s Manhunter: The Final Cut will be released in select theaters beginning Friday, July 24, 2026.
