Carol Sturka’s return on Apple TV for Pluribus season 2 receives a long-awaited update from the streamer’s head of programming.
Following record-breaking streaming viewership numbers and critical acclaim, Apple TV quickly rewarded Pluribus with a season 2 renewal. However, while season 1 of the Vince Gilligan-created and Rhea Seehorn-starring sci-fi series came to a close in December 2025, Apple TV has yet to confirm when season 2 will begin production or debut on the streaming service.
In the wake of Pluribus season 1 receiving 18 total nominations at the 2026 Emmys, including for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Rhea Seehorn, Apple TV head of programming Matt Cherniss addressed the release timeline of season 2 during an interview with Variety. While Cherniss was hesitant to estimate a return within the next Emmys cycle, the executive did note that “everyone is moving at a good pace” and they’re now “starting to see early drafts” of Pluribus season 2:
Matt Cherniss: “Vince [Gilligan] is really ambitious with [Pluribus] season 2, and really taking time to make sure that the show lives up to everyone’s expectations. It too is a very complicated show when it comes to executing and shooting, so that would be tough for us to fit into that next cycle. But we’re starting to see early drafts, and everyone’s moving at a good pace. So excited to see that one come back.”
Gilligan, who is also the creative mind behind Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, recently revealed that writing on season 2 had reached the halfway point. Meanwhile, in Rhea Seehorn’s latest update on Pluribus season 2‘s progress from late June, the star of the series revealed that she’s still unsure when filming on the highly anticipated upcoming episodes will commence.
In the same interview with Variety, Cherniss was asked whether a 2028 release window sounded “reasonable” for Pluribus season 2, though Apple TV’s head of programming simply responded that he “doesn’t have a date yet on that one.” Considering Pluribus season 1 began filming in February 2024 and didn’t premiere on Apple TV until November 2025, the fact that season 2 hasn’t even begun production yet suggests its return shouldn’t be expected until late 2027 at the earliest.
A two-year gap between seasons isn’t unheard of, however, with some of Apple TV’s most popular and acclaimed series having lengthy delays between installments. Notably, Severance season 2 arrived in January 2025, three years after its freshman outing, and is just now “nearing production” on season 3. Meanwhile, there have also been two-year or longer gaps between the first two seasons of Apple TV’s Sugar, Dark Matter, Presumed Innocent, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, The Last Thing He Told Me, and Bad Monkey.
Vince Gilligan’s Pluribus isn’t the only hit Apple TV series with 2026 Emmys nominations awaiting a verdict on when its next season will air. After becoming a sleeper hit sensation for the streamer this spring, Apple TV gave Widow’s Bay a season 2 order in early June. The multi-Emmy-nominee is similarly without a set timeline for production and release on season 2, and Cherniss appeared to suggest that a 2027 Widow’s Bay return would be unlikely. Also still in need of set release windows from Apple TV are Shrinking season 4, Margo’s Got Money Troubles season 2, Murderbot season 2, and The Morning Show season 5.
