There’s no shortage of new The Lord of the Rings content that fans have to be excited about, despite hardcore Tolkien fans feeling leery of recent projects such as Amazon’s Rings of Power and Andy Serkis’ upcoming The Hunt for Gollum film. With the recent announcement of Warhorse Studios’ official open-world RPG, however, LOTR enthusiasts are almost universally thrilled at the prospect of a Kingdom Come-style game adaptation set in Middle-earth.
That said, it’s likely going to be some time before we actually get a glimpse at any gameplay footage or an official trailer for Warhorse’s RPG, not to mention an actual release date to look forward to. Luckily, there’s no shortage of Lord of the Rings content slated for release in the coming months, such as the upcoming Ascension adaptation, Tales From Eriador, and the highly anticipated release of Lord of the Rings: Hope & Despair, which is slated to launch in Q4 2026 (via BGG).
Lord of the Rings fans will want to keep their eyes peeled for the upcoming release of Hope & Despair, a highly anticipated new expansion for the beloved War of the Ring card game from Ares Games. The expansion is officially confirmed for a 2026 release, listed for Q4 according to a listing on Board Game Geek, with more information expected to be revealed at this year’s Gen Con running from July 30 to August 2.
According to an official update earlier this year, the expansion is currently in development with progress going full steam ahead. Official details are as follows:
The expansion will include 54 cards: 36 faction cards plus 18 Against the Shadow replacement cards. All of the new cards are called “Story” cards. There will also be a set of new story tokens. These cards are played to reserve and have effects on play, like a character with game text might. However, most of the story cards are fueled by story tokens.
Hope & Despair is currently listed as part of Ares Games’ slate of items featured in the upcoming Gen Con later this month, and official promotional materials are likely to release at that time. In the meantime, if you’re not already aware, War of the Ring: The Card Game is a team-based strategy card game from Ares Games that adapts the conflict of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings into a faster, more accessible format than the acclaimed War of the Ring board game (which is also expected to get an expansion later this year).
Designed for two to four players, War of the Ring pits the Free Peoples against the Shadow using faction-specific decks featuring iconic Lord of the Rings characters, armies, items, and events from Middle-earth. Players compete for control of key battlegrounds while advancing or hindering the Fellowship’s journey to Mount Doom through tactical card play, and it’s well worth checking out ahead of the Hope & Despair expansion’s launch later this year.
