Red Dead Redemption 2 Becomes A Completely New Game If You Change One Setting

Red Dead Redemption 2 has cemented itself as a modern classic, despite not having yet reached even its tenth anniversary. Developed by Rockstar and marking the third installment in the Red Dead franchise, Red Dead Redemption 2 serves as a prequel to Red Dead Redemption, and shines a light on the declining Van der Linde gang, as well as the final years of the 19th century.

Praised for its vast open-world, attention to detail, characters, soundtrack, gameplay, and more, Red Dead Redemption 2 is regarded as one of the best video games of all time, making it no surprise that fans are eager for a potential Red Dead Redemption 3. However, with Rockstar currently dedicated to putting the final touches to Grand Theft Auto VI ahead of its launch this November, the future remains uncertain for its second award-winning franchise.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Keeps On Giving

Although Red Dead Redemption 2 comes alongside Red Dead Online, allowing friends to come together to live out their outlaw dreams at any time, it does not quite capture the magic of the base game, making it no surprise that fans regularly return to the American Frontier for another playthrough.

Thanks to its vast open-world, there are many ways that you can approach another playthrough of Red Dead Redemption 2, but thanks to one user over on r/reddeadredemption, there is a simple settings tweak that could completely change your next experience.

“I fully recommend playing without the minimap,” their post reads. “In case you don’t know, you can hold down on the d-pad to open minimap options, then turn it off. You can also set it to just a compass (but it seems to be a compass with built-in GPS, so I just use the time of day and the position of the sun/landmarks to get a rough idea of where north is).

“You end up playing with no HUD for most of the game (which is beautiful in itself) and you can actually get lost,” they explain. “You have to use the signposts and your own sense of direction to find your way around. You end up learning the roads around your camp and the nearest town very well. I love it.”

Not only will this present a challenge, but it also goes to show just how much detail Rockstar Games put into the world of Red Dead Redemption 2. Sign posts are not just there for decoration, but as this user explains, you can actually use them to find your way around the vast open-world, and when you can’t, getting lost just makes for another adventure.

Red Dead Redemption 3 Is Still A Long Way Off

“One of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had came yesterday when I decided to head north from the Lemoyne camp, up past Emerald Ranch in the direction of the East Grizzlies to do a bit of hunting,” the user continued. “I moved slowly, taking in my surroundings. Finding my way up a mountain (south of O’Creagh’s Run), I began to think I’d probably reached close to the edge of the map…then I looked over the mountain and all of eastern New Hanover is down there, along with so much more of the Grizzlies… I feel like I would have missed that moment of surprise and awe with the map always in the corner.”

With tips on how to play Red Dead Redemption 2 without the mini-map, this Reddit post has given us all the more incentive to boot up the hit game once more, and get lost in the magical world that Rockstar has created whilst we wait for what’s next for the beloved franchise.
