It’s been over a decade since the fourth game in the Fallout franchise was released, and fans are eagerly awaiting news of Fallout 5. Now, we may finally have received confirmation of the game’s future and what looms ahead for the series.
The Fallout universe hasn’t entirely been laying dormant. The recent Amazon Prime series presents a new perspective on the Wasteland and the radioactive horrors that lurk within it. After two successful seasons, a third season was confirmed for an anticipated 2027 release.
Fallout 5, on the other hand, has no official release date and has only been hinted at by Bethesda. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bethesda head Todd Howard spoke about the future of the TV show, and it may have huge implications for the franchise as a whole.
According to Howard, Season 3 of the Fallout show is currently in pre-production, with shooting scheduled to “start shooting soon.” As promised, Howard officially confirmed that the show is going to take the series to a completely new location for the first time.
So far, the series has stuck to locations that were already established in the video game series. With season 3, the series prepares to head into uncharted territory. Howard states:
“So one of the things that we all love about Fallout is the geography of the world and being able to show some new things in the Fallout world that I think will surprise people, that they’ve never seen before in the games.”
This is huge news for Fallout 5, implying that the upcoming title may follow the show. Howard has previously stated that the events of Fallout 5 will take place either after or at the same time as the events in the show. With the show being canon, it would make sense for the game to follow it along and visit the same locations.
At the end of the show’s second season, it was implied that the next season would potentially take place in Colorado. So far, the TV show has been following in the footsteps of the games, so it only makes sense for the upcoming game to do the same for the series.
Howard reiterated that Bethesda’s current priority is The Elder Scrolls 6, noting that it’s the studio’s “biggest project right now.” According to Howard, most of the studio is currently working on the Elder Scrolls title, saying: “We know we need to get it right and it’s been a long time.” In short, even though this news has huge implications for the upcoming Fallout 5, it may be a while before the game becomes a reality.
