Even if the series eventually lost more popularity with each outing, the massively popular Pirates of the Caribbean films are hands down some of the best pirate-themed movies of all time. Offering an excellent mix of action, comedy, and character drama that takes full advantage of their semi-historical setting, the most tragic part of PotC is how painfully little we know about the next installment in the franchise.
Having already been scrapped and restarted once during development, there’s no telling when we’ll get to officially revisit the world of Pirates of the Caribbean in the future, but thanks to one upcoming film project, we’re getting something even better that could help revitalize the genre in the meantime.
Officially announced in Xbox’s extensive series of interviews with Entertainment Weekly, a movie adaptation of the ever popular Sea of Thieves video game is not being developed into a live action movie, which is being created by the same filmmaker as the latest Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Although we have scarce few details about the upcoming adapttations as it seems to have only just started the early stages of conceptualization, Microsoft’s Matt Booty already seems to understand the exact tone and social-based focus that makes the pirate game so beloved, which still stands as one of the most successful and popular pirate games of all time.
While the sandbox-style gameplay that Sea of Thieves is known for is a far cry from the comedy-action narratives of the films, it’s still one of the best chances we have at getting a true seafaring experience on the big screen in years, with a plethora of similarities to the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
It isn’t just the similarities between the comedic plundering and exploration that make the Sea of Thieves movie worth keeping an eye on either, as the game has even collaborated with Pirates of the Caribbean in the past as well, offering an entire free story campaign for fans of the movies to enjoy.
With the collaboration already showing how much potential there is for new Pirates of the Caribbean games after their hayday back in the early 2000s, hopefully the Sea of Thieves movie can do the same for the movie industry, showing there’s still plenty of demand for new stories set on the seven seas, especially when it comes to large scale epics like Pirates of the Caribbean.
