Isidor scores screamer as Haiti dent Morocco’s first-place hopes

Wilson Isidor scored a memorable goal as Haiti dented Morocco‘s hopes of finishing first in World Cup Group C in an enthralling first half in Atlanta.

Already eliminated following their defeats to Scotland and Brazil, Haiti stunningly took the lead in the 10th minute when Jean-Kevin Duverne’s cross was flicked home by Lenny Joseph, though the goal was later given as a Yassine Bounou own goal.

Morocco responded by piling pressure on the Haiti goal, and they levelled as Achraf Hakimi bundled home from point-blank range after Placide could only parry a deflected effort from Bilal El Khannouss into his path.

The African champions would have expected to build on that equaliser and claim victory that could see them top the group.

But they were dealt another setback as Sunderland forward Isidor delivered a bolt from the blue, finding the top-left corner with a remarkable long-range strike.

Haiti’s joy at re-taking the lead was short-lived as Hakimi pulled back from Ismael Saibari to score his third goal of the tournament. Still, with Morocco level at 2-2 and Brazil leading Scotland 2-0 in the other Group C game, the North African side went into the interval seemingly set to settle for second.
