Colombia v DR Congo: Commentary, updates, goals and stats as South Americans seek place in World Cup knockouts

Colombia have a golden chance to make early progression into the round of 32 at the World Cup when they face DR Congo tonight.

The South American side were too strong for Uzbekistan in their Group K opener, Luis Diaz among the goals in a 3-1 victory.

DR Congo shouldn’t be underestimated, however, after grinding out a hugely creditable 1-1 draw with Portugal in their first game.

They have plenty of Premier League experience with the likes of Yoane Wissa, Arthur Masuaku, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Noah Sadiki.

  • This will be the first meeting between Colombia and DR Congo.
  • Colombia have won six of their last seven group stage matches. They have scored 17 goals and conceded just five in that run.
  • Indeed, Colombia have scored in each of their last 10 World Cup games, the joint-longest active streak in the competition (also Argentina).
  • Having lost their first World Cup game against African opposition in a 2-1 last-16 defeat to Cameroon in 1990, Colombia have since won each of their last three matches against such opponents.
  • DR Congo lost their only other game against CONMEBOL opposition, a pre-tournament friendly against Chile.
  • Should Wissa find the net again for DR Congo, he will become only the second African player to score in each of his first two World Cup appearances, replicating the feat of Mohamed Salah for Egypt in 2018.
