The Legend of Zelda has garnered a rather impressive legacy owing, in large part, to its legendarily good lineup of games. Titles like Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess cemented its status as one of the foundational influences for the entire RPG genre throughout all stages of its life, and more recent games like Breath of the Wild have completely revolutionized the open-world genre while onboarding a whole new swathe of fans.
However, the series is not infallible, as even The Legend of Zelda faces minor controversies from time to time, including delays and divisive entries. Most recently, a high-profile cancellation rocked the Zelda community, ending what was a huge, long-gestating project that had been in the works for years. It is an enormous shame as it marks the end of an era for many and leaves the future of certain other Zelda projects in potential turmoil.
Zelda Fans Have Followed This Remake For 10 Years
Fans of Ocarina of Time will be very familiar with developer CryZENx, a dedicated fan of all things retro who has been steadily working on a complete remake of the beloved Legend of Zelda game for the past 10 years. CryZENx shared details of the development via their official YouTube channel and even released playable demos of the remake, which was being created using Unreal Engine 5. It was an incredibly impressive project, the kind that one imagines when thinking of a ground-up remake of an iconic classic N64 title.
Sadly, CryZENx announced recently that their Ocarina of Time remake is officially canceled. The entire project, after 10 years of hard work, is over, with no finished product in sight. It is a shame, especially considering just how impressive the gameplay shared by CryZENx was, but a necessary move. CryZENx explained that this wasn’t a result of action on Nintendo’s behalf, but rather a precautionary measure now that an official Ocarina of Time remake has been announced.
CryZENx didn’t see the need for their remake now that Nintendo was providing one of its own. Regardless, it is sad to see this interpretation of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time go, especially for those of us like me who have been following its development since CryZENx first announced it. Fortunately, CryZENx has a few more remakes planned, and there are constantly new Legend of Zelda mods and remasters being released for those who are interested. Of course, there is also the aforementioned official remake heading to Nintendo Switch 2 later this year.
Fortunately, The Real Deal Releases This Year
Nintendo announced during the June 2026 Nintendo Direct that an official remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time would be released at some point later in the year. Very little has been shared about the game, although there have been a handful of Ocarina of Time remake gameplay details teased since its initial announcement. It isn’t particularly surprising that one of the most critically acclaimed and beloved Zelda games is getting a remake on Switch 2, not the least thanks to the countless leaks and rumors before its actual announcement, which spoiled its existence.
Still, it will be interesting to see how Nintendo handles a big-budget Ocarina of Time remake and how it differs from the efforts of CryZENx and others who have envisioned a modernized version of the nearly 30-year-old game. Some expect the studio to take the safe route and merely update the visuals, while others believe it will have revamped gameplay and new content. Of course, it remains to be seen; however, it is clear that The Legend of Zelda is entering a new era, one potentially dominated by remakes, and one sadly absent of CryZENx’s adaptation of Ocarina of Time.
