Goku is such a core part of the Dragon Ball franchise that any time he isn’t at the center of everything, it feels entirely different as a fan. In case you missed all the fun, the annual Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour two-day event took place a little while back, and Xenoverse 3 was confirmed alongside huge updates for their existing roster of titles.
In a further announcement of the news on the official PlayStation blog, the developer shared an insight into what fans can expect, saying, “We’re excited to announce Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3. Step into a brand-new Dragon Ball universe filled with unique, original characters brought to life by Akira Toriyama, the original author of Dragon Ball. Journey through Age 1000 where West City stands as the vibrant heart of this world. Explore the bustling city, encounter new characters, and uncover exciting new stories.”
It looks like a lot of fun, and players will be able to choose their own customizable character again this time around. That said, you won’t be alone, and though Goku won’t be there to the same extent, he’s been replaced by someone more than ready to carry on his legacy.
If you didn’t know already, Xenoverse 3 takes place a couple of centuries in the future from the previous game, and this time around we will be accompanied by Brett. As first reported by CBR, though we don’t know it yet, it’s a fairly safe bet that the new character is a relative of Goku himself, and as such, should end up being pretty powerful.
It’s no secret that Saiyan’s traditionally have vegetable-esque names that mark them out. This obviously isn’t true for Brett, but it does make sense that he’s named that way to mark him out as a direct descent of Gohan.
All of the latter’s family so far have been named after types of grain, with Brett’s Japanese name essentially being pronounced as Buretto, which is pointedly similar to the word Bureddo, or bread, in English.
It’s certainly a really interesting next step for the series, and Toriyama’s close and direct involvement certainly sets it up for success.
We don’t have a specific release date for Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 just yet, though we won’t have too long to wait, as it is set to launch in the Summer of 2026, one the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC.
