Tom Holland Teases Spider-Man 5 With New Character Update

While Spider-Man: Brand New Day is already bringing more Marvel characters to the big screen, Tom Holland promises even more comic icons are to come.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran returns to the franchise as the fan-favorite wall-crawler after first playing the hero in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. In addition to Holland, Brand New Day stars Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Sadie Sink, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo. Though not a full reboot, the film aims to show a different side of Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

Notably, Brand New Day is the fourth solo Spider-Man film starring Holland, meaning he is the film actor with the longest tenure in the role. Previously, he tied with Tobey Maguire with three films starring as the title character.

Recently, Holland addressed the fan-favorite character’s future in the MCU. “We have plans for some really spectacular new characters to appear,” he said. “How? We don’t know yet, but it’s going to be fantastic.”

While he did not elaborate on which characters, Holland’s statements could hint at a multitude of Spider-verse heroes. For example, Miles Morales has been teased in the MCU before, with Donald Glover appearing as his uncle, Aaron Davis, in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). Miles normally acts as a replacement for Peter, so it may seem that he would come into his power as Holland hangs up the mask and web shooters.

Despite this tease, Holland has been open about wanting to stay in the role for at least a few more years, debunking his own claim in years past that he would retire as Spider-Man by age 30. “I think the point of it is that I would love to pass the baton on, and I haven’t achieved that yet,” Holland clarified. “It’s definitely something that we talk about a lot at the studio. So maybe I need to change the quote to 37… I think the truth is that playing Spider-Man has been the joy of my life… I now kind of stand on the plinth of, like, I’ll do it for as long as they’ll have me.

Considering Holland’s aspiration to remain Spider-Man for at least a few more films, it seems likely that the characters to whom he is referring are allies and enemies audiences have yet to seen fully adapted. For example, while Felicia Hardy has made it to film, as portrayed by Felicity Jones, her Black Cat alter ego has not. Nonetheless, Holland continuing his web-slinging run has a lot of potential for more interesting stories.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day releases in theaters on July 31, 2026.
