Curry Barker’s Obsession is on an incredible streak right now and its box office numbers are showing no signs of slowing down. However, before Obsession reigned supreme as 2026’s biggest horror box office hit, Zach Cregger’s Weapons took the global box office by storm in 2025. Weapons even performed incredibly well during the awards season, suggesting that Obsession, too, might get a similar reception later this year.

From a storytelling standpoint, Curry Barker’s Obsession and Zach Cregger’s Weapons are two significantly different movies. While they might share a few intriguing tropes or two, they seem to unfold in completely different worlds. Despite this, though, an intriguing horror theory has somehow drawn a connection between them. The connection suggests that they might have taken place in the same universe.

Given how both movies have been helmed by two different directors, there are obviously no explicit connections between them. The shared universe theory that connects them still seems fascinating because it has some plausible aspects. It also points out how traces of the same genius narrative devices can be found in two completely distinct and original horror stories.

Intriguing Theory Connects Obsession’s “One Wish Willow” To Aunt Glady’s Tree In Weapons

Almost midway through its runtime, Weapons reveals its core supernatural twist, which shows how Aunt Gladys uses witchcraft and a holly tree branch to get whatever she wants. She snaps the tree’s twig, which invokes a dark, ritualistic spell that triggers the terrifying disappearance of the third-grade children in the movie.

A closer look at the inner-workings of the “One Wish Willow” in Obsession reveals how it is not too different from the holly tree brand Aunt Gladys uses. Like Gladys, Obsession‘s Bear snaps a novelty trinket to activate his wish of having Nikki love him more than anyone else in the world.

The identical physical action that unleashes the supernatural terrors in both movies has led to many to speculate that the two movies are connected and a part of the same universe.

Some viewers are starting to theorize that the One Wish Willow might actually be a branch from the tree Aunt Gladys uses in Weapons. And if not that, the two horror devices could at least be tied to the same witchcraft lore. Considering these similarities, it is hard not to deny that the theory is quite plausible.

Interestingly, though, the official website for the “One Wish Willow” reveals four things one cannot ask for:

The website also mentions that only “one wish per life per person” is granted. This rule does not seem to apply to the brand used by Aunt Gladys as she makes multiple wishes throughout the movie. The twig-snapping moments in both movies are still intriguing overlaps that make them fun companion pieces at most.

However, beyond the core mechanism of their horror devices, Obsession and Weapons also dabble with significantly different themes. It is still fun to speculate on how some of the best modern horror movies unknowingly end up drawing references and connective threads to each other, encouraging viewers to theorize how they might be set in the same universe.
