Barcelona star Pedri on target as Spain cruise past Peru in final World Cup warm-up game

Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedri were among the goalscorers as Spain completed their preparation for the World Cup with a 3-1 win over Peru last night.

The European champions were much too strong for a Peru side that have not qualified for the global showpiece that gets underway on Thursday.

Oyarzarbal opened the scoring after just two minutes at the Cuauthémoc Stadium in the Mexican city of Puebla with a long-range effort and Pedri doubled Spain’s advantage shortly after the half-hour mark.

Luis de la Fuente made four substitutions at the break and four more after 61 minutes, by which time the advantage had been stretched to 3-0 with Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese diverting Yeremy Pino’s cross into his own net.

Peru did not offer much going forward but they did grab a consolation when Marcos Lopez’s fine through ball was clinically finished by Jairo Velez.

It was a good work out for Spain, for whom Rodri played for just over an hour and Mikel Merino continued his comeback with a 30-minute cameo.

“We ended up very satisfied, without injuries and with very good phases of play,” said De la Fuente. “Rodri is in fantastic shape. I could have played him more. And Mikel is doing well. They will all arrive in great condition. People can be calm.”

Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams and Victor Munoz missed the game through injury but De la Fuente remains confident they will be fit and ready for Spain’s Group H opener against Cape Verde in Atlanta on June 15.
