Red Dead Redemption 2 is rapidly coming up on ten years since its initial release, and it continues to delight players the world over thanks to its beautiful command of both gameplay and aesthetics. Many of those who return each day in 2026 do so to enjoy the online modes, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had in the single-player.
This is particularly true for those who play on PC, where an extensive modding community has grown up around the game that continues to bring out new experiences for players to enjoy. One of those projects is on the way relatively soon, and it’s about as ambitious as any that we have seen so far.
Many of you who played through the first Red Dead Redemption game will undoubtedly remember just how brilliant New Austin was to explore as a player. Though it features in the follow-up, it isn’t the same place, and it’s a lot more empty than many of us would have liked it to be once unlocked in the prologue.
That’s where Project New Austin comes in, as a highly ambitious mod that brings back many of the designs, color schemes, and locations from the original region into the new game. Over on YouTube, a teaser video for the mod has been blowing fans away with what the team have managed to achieve.
“Dude, this update was SO good, man. I love the new interiors, like the ferry and wreck of serendipity and oil refinery thing. Also, I love that you got the McFarlanes ranch. The original ranch mod was good and this was a cool improvement. Keep up the great work, you and all the other people who helped on this. Y’all are great,” one comment read.
While another added, “This looks like an actual RDR2 trailer. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone said this was an actual update cause it looks like it’s a real trailer. Also, the mod looks good too.”
“I just installed this mod, and it makes the game so much better. I was so impressed about how they added a roulette table to the ferry in Blackwater. I bet that took a lot of time to make,” a third said.
Given that GTA VI is going to be dominating all of Rockstar’s time for a while to come yet, the likelihood of another Red Dead Redemption adventure from the developer themselves is unlikely. That’s why we need to be so grateful to fans like this who continue to bring us fresh things to do in a world that remains very compelling.
