Cyberpunk 2077 Prequel Official Teaser Has Gamers Losing It

Set in the not-so-distant future, in a city that is corrupt as much as it is beautiful, Cyberpunk 2077 offered players a living, breathing world when it launched back in 2020 and, as a result, it has cemented itself as one of the most influential video games of all time. Going on to inspire graphic novel collections, crossover events, and even arcade games, there is one Cyberpunk 2077-inspired project that has been more influential than most: Cyberpunk Edgerunners.

Airing back in 2022, the Netflix anime show takes place in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, yet serves as a prequel to the events of the game. Produced by Japanese animation studio Trigger, Cyberpunk Edgerunners follows the story of David Martinez, a street kid who soon finds himself embroiled in Night City’s gritty underworld as he battles with the rise of cybernetic enhancements, new friends, and terrifying enemies.

Praised for its writing, characters, animation, music, and worldbuilding, Cyberpunk Edgerunners was soon greenlit for a second season back in 2025, and it is that standalone sequel that is the subject of a recent announcement.

Courtesy of the official Cyberpunk Edgerunners Twitter/X account, Cyberpunk Edgerunners season two will be making an appearance at 2026’s Anime Expo, which takes place on 3 July at 7:30 PM PT. “Join us for a first look at the next standalone story from Night City, plus a behind-the-scenes discussion with the creators bringing it to life,” the social media post reads. “Hosted by Danny Motta, featuring Director Kai Ikarashi, Showrunner Bartosz Sztybor, Executive Producer Saya Elder, and special guests.”

This marks the first time that we will receive an official look at what season two has to offer, as details surrounding the story and its characters still remain a mystery at the time of writing. What we do know, is that season two of Cyberpunk Edgerunners will consist of 10 episodes and will focus on another standalone story, meaning that you do not need previous knowledge of either the first season or Cyberpunk 2077 as a whole (although I highly recommend both).

Following the social media announcement, it was safe to say that fans were hyped about the upcoming reveal, and took to the comments to share their thoughts. “Is this one going to be soul-crushingly depressing too?” One asked, and with the show writer previously telling fans that they should be “prepared for sadness”, the answer is probably yes. Another agreed, adding, “Ready to get my heart and soul crushed once again!”

“Would love to see maybe a finale release in theaters,” another user suggested. “Seeing it on the big screen truly breathtaking visuals.” I cannot help but agree with that one, but for now, it remains a mystery as to when we can expect Cyberpunk Edgerunners season two to arrive on Netflix, but hopefully, the upcoming Anime Expo panel will tell us more.
