Rick & Morty Season 8 Release Date Revealed

Rick and Morty season 8 is on the way, and its long-awaited release date has finally been revealed. Co-created by Dan Harmon, the Emmy-winning animated comedy follows the galaxy-spanning misadventures of a sociopathic scientist, Rick Sanchez, and his anxious grandson, Morty. Rick and Morty season 7 ended with “Fear No Mort,” an episode that earned the show its highest IMDb ratings in years, thanks to its inventive structure and a powerful exploration of Morty’s deepest fear: being abandoned by Rick. Despite the departure of original co-creator Justin Roiland in 2023, the Adult Swim juggernaut continues to be a global success.

Now, Adult Swim has confirmed that Rick and Morty season 8 will premiere on Sunday, May 25 at 11:00 PM ET/PT. The returning cast for Rick and Morty season 8 includes Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden as Rick and Morty, alongside Sarah Chalke, Chris Parnell, and Spencer Grammer. Executive producers Dan Harmon and Scott Marder (who also serves as showrunner) will return to the helm. Adult Swim also dropped a first look at the new season, which you can watch below:

Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen added in a statement:

We hope you enjoyed our theater interpretations of ‘Rick and Morty,’ especially if you are well-off/impulsive and now want to back a Broadway version of the show. For the rest of you, we’re glad you now know when Season Eight is starting so you have time to stretch and get loose because the team has yet again made a totally great season of television.

What This Means For Rick And Morty Season 8

The Space-Traveling Duo Returns For More Mayhem

The final episode of Rick and Morty season 7 delivered a surprisingly introspective journey for Morty, who was forced to consider what his life could look like if he stopped centering it around his sardonic grandfather’s approval. In a rare moment of vulnerability, Rick admitted his fear and chose to embrace his current reality rather than chase the ghost of his late wife. The moment offered a rare moment of growth for both characters and allows the series to return to its more lighthearted roots in Rick and Morty season 8.

Following the heavier existential themes explored in season 7, the door is open for other characters to take the spotlight in Rick and Morty’s upcoming chapter. Concept art shared on the show’s official Instagram teased the debut of an “Adult Summer,” signaling a potential leap forward in time or alternate-timeline storylines with Rick and Morty season 8 breaking a major show rule against time travel. As the show embraces time travel for only the third time, Summer could be the perfect anchor for Rick and Morty’s next chapter.

Adult Swim’s official synopsis for the upcoming season also hints at the return of the Sanchez family’s signature dysfunction as well as the return of Butter Bot, the small sentient robot created by Rick in season 1, who’s greatly dissatisfied with the task he was made to fulfill. Read the Rick and Morty season 8 synopsis below:

Rick and Morty is back for Season Eight! Life has meaning again! Anything is possible! Look out for adventures with Summer, Jerry, Beth, and the other Beth. Maybe Butter Bot will get a new task? Whatever happens, you can’t keep Rick and Morty down for long. People have tried!

Our Take On Rick And Morty Season 8

The Classic Sanchez Chaos Returns

With Rick Prime finally gone, Rick and Morty season 8 is poised to return to the show’s chaotic, irreverent roots. Season 7 closed major character arcs for both leads: Rick let go of his obsession with Diane, and Morty confronted life without his grandfather. Now, with Rick choosing to stay grounded rather than disappear into the cosmos once again, Rick and Morty will return to the series’ classic misadventures that feature the Sanchez family’s usual dynamic without losing the emotional progress that’s been earned.
