Black Caps counter early collapse to dominate Ireland in Belfast

While the pre-match headlines belonged to the record-breaking veterans, the actual play on Day 1 delivered high drama. Ireland’s bowling spearhead, Mark Adair, vindicated his captain’s decision to bowl by striking almost instantly. Adair cleaned up skipper Latham for a two-ball duck in the very first over and quickly dismissed Devon Conway for just 4 runs. When Liam McCarthy trapped Williamson leg-before for 36, and Adair snapped up Daryl Mitchell for a golden duck, New Zealand slumped to a precarious 86 for 4.

However, the Black Caps showcased their trademark resilience. Young sensation Rachin Ravindra paired up with wicketkeeper-batter Tom Blundell to orchestrate a monumental rescue mission. The duo compiled a staggering 217-run partnership for the fifth wicket, single-handedly turning the tide of the match. Ravindra played an elegant yet aggressive knock, smashing 121 runs off 194 balls, including 14 boundaries and 4 towering sixes, before falling to Harry Tector late in the afternoon.

Blundell anchor-dropped at the other end, converting his steady start into a magnificent unbeaten century. By the time the umpires called stumps at the end of 94 overs, New Zealand had comfortably reached 361 for 5. Blundell walked off unbeaten on a masterful 142 runs off 233 balls (hitting 18 fours and 2 sixes), alongside Dean Foxcroft, who provided excellent late-day support with a composed 38 not out. Despite early breakthroughs from Adair (3/66), Ireland’s bowling attack tired against a masterful New Zealand counter-offensive that leaves the visitors firmly in the driver’s seat heading into Day 2.
