A beloved franchise starring Matthew Lillard in one of the lead roles will soon be experienced by a new audience.
While becoming famous for playing Stu Macher in 1996’s Scream, the actor has also taken on numerous iconic franchises, including video game adaptations and several roles in various horror movies. As Lillard has several big roles coming up, one of his all-time favorite roles is heading to a big streaming platform.
The live-action Scooby-Doo franchise from the early 2000s is heading to Netflix this summer. The two films will arrive on the massive streaming platform on June 1 in the United States.
Lillard played Shaggy Rogers in Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, which were directed by Raja Gosnell and written by James Gunn. The two mystery comedy installments marked as the first proper cinematic portrayal of the Mystery Incorporated gang.
The Scooby-Doo movie cast also starred Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne Blake, Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred Jones, and Linda Cardellini as Velma Dinkley. Neil Fanning voiced the iconic talking dog in both films, as the short-lived big-screen franchise grossed over $456 million at the worldwide box office.
Scooby-Doo Movie Title | Domestic Box Office | International Box Office | Worldwide Box Office | Rotten Tomatoes Score | Audience Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Scooby-Doo (2002) | $153.2 Million | $122.3 Million | $275.6 Million | 32% | 41% |
Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004) | $84.2 Million | $97 Million | $181.2 Million | 22% | 42% |
Even though Scooby-Doo 3 became one of the many unmade movies from Gunn and Gosnell, the two comedy horror installments have, over the decades, become cult classics. Thanks to home media release and streaming, audience members have discovered the films and extended their popularity.
However, Lillard has voiced Shaggy in numerous animated projects, and he is about to do it again. It was revealed on May 18 that he and Frank Welker – who has played the legendary popular talking Great Dane for decades – will be co-starring together in the Yokoso Scooby-Doo! anime, which is heading to Tubi.
The Netflix move is also coming at the perfect time, as the streaming giant is currently working on its live-action Scooby-Doo reboot TV show. The small-screen adaptation will be an origin story for the four beloved characters, as it explores how Mystery Incorporated came to be in the first place.
In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan earlier in 2026, the Shaggy veteran shared how he would love to appear in Netflix’s new take on Scooby-Doo. Lillard stressed how “I think it’s a really special property, so if I can help give pointers to whoever’s playing Shaggy next, I’m happy to do that.”
Tanner Hagen has been tapped to play the next live-action Shaggy in Scooby-Doo: Origins, which is currently filming in Atlanta, Georgia. The modern take also stars Mckenna Grace as Daphne, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma, and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones, with Welker voicing Scooby here, too.
Lillard is currently having a big year across the big and small screens. After coming back as Stu in Scream 7, he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Daredevil: Born Again season 2 as Mr. Charles.
Not long after the latest season aired on Disney+, it was revealed that Lillard and Gunn are finally reuniting, with the popular star joining the filmmaker’s DC Universe. While his role hasn’t been revealed yet, the Scooby-Doo veteran will be appearing in 2027’s Man of Tomorrow, which is currently in production.
