While Magic: The Gathering has become no stranger to collaborations with massively popular franchises over the past few years, its upcoming Marvel crossover is easily one of the most anticipated projects yet. Releasing as a complete set boasting pre-constructed decks, beginner sets, drafts, boosters, and more, the Marvel set was promising to have something for just about every fan out there, except for one notable group of players.
Facing the same set of problems as MTG‘s previous collaboration with Marvel’s Spider-Man, the limited license between the two posed a few significant problems that are hard to ignore. Thankfully, after months of silence on the topic, Wizards of the Coast just put out an official statement that MTG has finally overcome the largest obstacle facing their future Marvel collaboration.
Announced on the official Wizards blog, the upcoming Marvel x Magic: The Gathering set will not be receiving a Through the Omenpaths alternative on MTG Arena. The full Marvel set with all of its card art, descriptions, and descriptive flair will be fully available through Arena when the upcoming set drops, as well as for any Marvel collaborations in the future.
While the update will certainly make things far less confusing when swapping between the tabletop and digital versions of MTG, the change is also retroactively applying to the previous Spider-Man crossover set on June 16. If you’re someone who still prefers the MTG original Through the Omenpaths designs, however, rather than instantly replacing all the previous cards, you’ll instead receive duplicate versions of any owned Omenpaths cards featuring their Spider-Man themed counterparts.
Unfortunately, if you do prefer the Omenpaths designs but haven’t had a chance to collect them all yet, Marvel’s Spider-Man packs will be fully replacing their Through the Omenpaths booster counterparts when the update goes live. The previous designs can still be purchased as card styles using gold or gems.
Given the sheer amount of Easter eggs and tributes that fill each of Marvel’s collaboration sets with MTG, it’s great to see that the cards will have their full original designs implemented both physically and through the digital format of MTG Arena, rather than having the confusing mix of cards that only exist on Arena compared to their differently named counterparts to help ease new players into the game.
Although previous collaborations have had varying levels of success, the Marvel set already seems to be living up to the hype with its latest card spoilers alongside this latest promising update. This also offers more reason to be excited for even more Magic: The Gathering crossover events with the legendary comic giant in the future.
