IPL 2026 [WATCH]: Venkatesh Iyer marks his half-century with a Vijay-inspired celebration during the PBKS vs RCB clash

The high-altitude scenic beauty of Dharamsala set the stage for a high-stakes thriller as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) locked horns with Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the 61st match of IPL 2026 on Sunday. With playoff spots on the line, the evening promised high drama, and it delivered in spades. While the picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium provided a stunning backdrop, the real fireworks happened on the pitch, courtesy of a blistering batting display from RCB that left the opposition searching for answers.

Venkatesh Iyer pulls off iconic Vijay celebration following his fifty against PBKS

With regular mainstay Rajat Patidar sidelined due to an injury, Royal Challengers Bengaluru needed someone to step up and anchor the middle order. Venkatesh Iyer did exactly that, walking out at No. 4 and putting on an absolute masterclass in aggressive T20 batting. The left-hander looked in tremendous form from the get-go, completely dominating the Punjab Kings bowling attack. He smashed an unbeaten 73 off just 40 deliveries, a blazing knock decorated with eight boundaries and four towering sixes, driving RCB’s total well past the 220-run mark.

However, it wasn’t just his explosive batting that stole the headlines. Upon reaching a blistering 29-ball half-century, Venkatesh celebrated the milestone by replicating a famous pose made iconic by Thalapathy Vijay in his blockbuster film Mersal. The tribute to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and star actor instantly sent shockwaves through social media. Video clips of the gesture went viral within minutes, with fans praising the cricketer’s flair and pointing out the uncanny similarities to the actor’s screen presence. Iyer’s knock ultimately earned him the well-deserved Player of the Match honours.

Driven by Iyer’s brilliance and a fine half-century from Virat Kohli (58 off 37 balls), alongside a crucial cameo from Devdutt Padikkal (45 off 25 balls), RCB posted a mammoth total of 222/4 in their allotted 20 overs. Harpreet Brar was the pick of the bowlers for Punjab, claiming two wickets for 35 runs, but the rest of the attack suffered under the Bengaluru onslaught.

Chasing a daunting target of 223, Punjab Kings’ top order crumbled under early pressure. Veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck gold in the very first over, dismissing Priyansh Arya for a duck and later removing Prabhsimran Singh for just 2 runs to finish. Rasikh Salam dismantled the middle order with an exceptional spell, picking up three crucial wickets for 36 runs.

Despite a roaring counter-attack from Shashank Singh, who smashed a valiant 56 off 27 balls, and handy contributions from Cooper Connolly (37) and Marcus Stoinis (37), PBKS fell consistently behind the required run rate. Bengaluru’s disciplined bowling restricted Punjab to 199/8 when the 20 overs concluded. Securing a clinical 23-run victory, Royal Challengers Bengaluru officially punched their ticket to the IPL 2026 playoffs, keeping their championship dreams very much alive.
