Why The Pitt Won’t Have A Night Shift Spinoff Explained By Noah Wyle

A night shift spinoff for The Pitt isn’t coming anytime soon.

Created by R. Scott Gemmill, the hit HBO medical drama follows the doctors and nurses of the Pittsburg Trauma Medical Center, led by Noah Wyle’s Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch. As with season 1, the response to The Pitt season 2 has been overwhelmingly positive, and some viewers have taken to social media to express interest in spending more time with the night shift characters in the form of a spinoff.

During an appearance on the A Lot More podcast, Wyle, who is also an executive producer on the show, reveals that he doesn’t think that a night shift spinoff for The Pitt is a good idea. According to Wyle, there are several problems that would come with such a spinoff, and one is just that those night shift characters are getting what he sees as the right amount of screen time.

I said off-handedly the other day that I think we’re getting enough night shift,” Wyle says. “And I think you want more, but you’re getting what I think is appropriate.”

The Dr. Robby actor is aware that not all share his point of view. He points out that he’s been dubbed “patronizing and pretentious” on social media for shutting down the idea, but the comments haven’t changed his mind. He continues: “I still don’t think you need more night shift. Those are great characters. It’s a wonderful energy.”

The other reason why a night shift spinoff isn’t a great idea, Wyle continues, is that it may not make for the kind of high-tension character drama The Pitt thrives on. “You know who works mostly night shift? Mothers,” Wyle explains. “Because they like to be free for their kids [and] to be home during the day. So, it’s a lot less wild and woolly, and a lot more boring and sedate than you would think.”

Shawn Hatosy’s Dr. Jack Abbot emerged as a favorite in The Pitt season 1, and season 2 only further endeared this character with viewers. Wyle is well aware of the response to Abbot and to the larger night shift crew, and he understands why audiences want more of them.

Those are great characters,” Wyle says. “We love bringing them in.”

Though Wyle knows how popular Abbot and the night crew are, he says that another thing giving him pause about a spinoff is the potential dilution of The Pitt‘s winning formula. According to the star, building out the show as a franchise could take away from what makes it special. As Wyle explains:

I’ll say personally, I feel like when you have something that’s a really good thing and it’s working for you, you don’t want to dissipate it too quickly. You don’t want to bleed it off into other narratives and franchise it out, because I think you kind of dilute the potency a little bit and you get everybody overfamiliar with the arena to where it loses a little bit of its specialness.”

The Pitt remains one of HBO’s most popular shows, but there have been no official announcements yet regarding spinoffs or expansions. Season 2 aired its finale on April 16, capping another well-reviewed and popular 15 episodes.

The Pitt season 3 is already confirmed to be in the works, and it’s expected to premiere in early 2027. The show has been so popular that HBO has already renewed it through to season 7, likely with an annual release schedule. Though there’s plenty more of The Pitt to come, it’s clear that audiences shouldn’t hold their breath on a night shift spinoff.
