Why Prime Video’s #1 Show Based On Bestselling Book Is Dominating Worldwide Streaming Charts

Prime Video’s latest book adaptation has already stormed the streaming charts, claiming the coveted top spot. As a streaming service, Prime Video has done well in the book adaptation market, from fantasy epics like The Wheel of Time and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to action-heavy shows like The Boys and Young Sherlock. Another genre where Prime has historically excelled, however, is romance, with series like Jenny Han’s The Summer I Turned Pretty and German-language Maxton Hall breaking viewership records and dominating online conversation.

Prime’s latest romantic adaptation, Off Campus, has found similar widespread acclaim and popularity. Unlike The Summer I Turned Pretty and Maxton Hall, however, Louisa Levy’s steamy adaptation is geared to a more adult audience, as the show follows the romantic entanglements of the fictional Briar University’s hockey team. Based on the bestselling books by Elle Kennedy, Off Campus has established itself as a contemporary rival to Netflix’s Bridgerton, with an early season 2 renewal allowing the show to grow its ensemble cast and introduce the upcoming season’s primary romance.

Off Campus’ first eight-episode season chronicles the heartwarming love story between hockey captain Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli) and music composer Hannah Wells (Ella Bright), as they strike a romance reader’s perfect deal: Garrett will help Hannah get noticed by her crush, Justin Kohl (Josh Heuston), if she helps tutor him for their ethics class. Of course, as it often does, fake dating turns into real dating, as Hannah and Garrett learn to trust one another implicitly, both emotionally and physically.

Off Campus Season 1 Is Already #1 On Prime Video’s Worldwide Streaming Charts

Prime Video

Since its debut on Wednesday, May 13, Off Campus has raced up Prime Video’s Top 10 TV Shows chart in the United States and globally. It reached the no. 1 spot worldwide on Friday, May 15, and took the crown in the US on Saturday, May 16. This minor delay makes sense, as more potential viewers will have heard about the show throughout the week and waited until the weekend to take a look. It’s currently the top-most streamed Prime Video show in over 20 territories, including the US, the UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, India, South Africa, and Switzerland.

As word spreads, it’s likely Off Campus will maintain its position in the charts well into next week, as fans watch (and rewatch) the show. At this point, its primary competition is The Boys; its series finale will premiere on Wednesday, May 20. Whether Off Campus will reach the same streaming chart heights as its predecessor, The Summer I Turned Pretty, remains to be seen, however. The Summer I Turned Pretty spent 136 days in the global Top 10 this year alone — an incredible feat, considering its third and final season ended in September last year.

However, Off Campus will undoubtedly benefit from its confirmed season 2 renewal, as audiences will be eager to embark on a romantic journey for a show they can be confident will return, rather than waiting anxiously for news about its cancellation. While Prime’s announcement may have been surprising at the time — three full months before the show premiered on the platform — it’s clear they saw something in Levy’s vision. Now that the show has been released, Amazon MGM Studios’ faith in the show is understandable.

Why Reviews For Off Campus Season 1 Are So Good

Of course, after the incredible success of Crave’s hockey-oriented romance, Heated Rivalry, there was bound to be some interest in Off Campus. The two shows are very different, though, each approaching their primary couples and the romance genre as a whole in vastly different ways (Off Campus does borrow one of Heated Rivalry‘s best tricks, however, as becomes clear in the show’s sixth episode).

As Off Campus‘ stellar 95% Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score proves, the series has established its own identity, introducing a genuinely likable cast of characters and a strong main romantic storyline with real insight and heart. The romance between Hannah and Garrett feels earned, as their friendship leads to a level of honesty and trust they haven’t found with those closest to them. And yes, while the show includes numerous sex scenes and montages, most of them are either playful and fun or represent a truly pivotal moment in Hannah and Garrett’s relationship and Hannah’s journey to reclaim her sexual agency.

It doesn’t shy away from thoughtfully exploring its characters’ traumatic backstories either, without ever feeling heavy-handed. It’s simply a part of their lives, and why they find each other. As FandomWire‘s Callie Hanna wrote, “The romance lands, the supporting cast is delightful, and it goes far deeper on its themes than it ever needed to.” The Guardian‘s Lucy Mangan called it “deeply soothing and incredibly moreish,” while RogerEbert.com’s Sherin Nicole wrote that it’s “a swoon-worthy, hot, and heated rom-com-drama that gives its story space to fully bloom just like its characters.”

ScreenRant‘s own Off Campus review noted that “the team behind Off Campus truly cares about the source material, these characters, and the genre as a whole.” Anyone who enjoys romance, whether in movie, TV, or book form, will undoubtedly find something to love in Off Campus. Streaming numbers don’t lie, after all. Prime Video knew what it was doing when it renewed the show for season 2. There are four books in total (and another sequel series, to boot), so there could be plenty more steamy love stories to come.

Off Campus season 1 is now streaming, exclusively on Prime Video.
