After the newly announced lineup of PlayStation Plus games being added to the service, it looks like Red Dead Redemption 2 is officially going to be available for free for millions of subscribers alongside several other top-tier games starting on May 19. The announcement came as a welcome surprise to fans of the franchise, and has also ignited a wave of speculation among fans ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6‘s highly anticipated release later this year.
And seeing as Red Dead Redemption 2 fans have been keeping their fingers crossed for ages now for an official announcement from Rockstar regarding a current-gen 60fps upgrade for PS5, the PS Plus reveal has sparked a wave of renewed hope. However unlikely, fans think Rockstar could potentially roll out a free upgrade on May 19 akin to the recent RDR1 current-gen upgrade that launched late last year.
With Grand Theft Auto 6 likely to get a third trailer any day now ahead of the official marketing push this summer, fans are mainlining RDR2-upgrade hopium, with gamers across Reddit and X universally agreeing that this would be the perfect opportunity and give fans “something to do waiting for November” (1).
Unlike the Red Dead Redemption 1 upgrade that released in December 2025, an official Red Dead Redemption 2 current-gen upgrade would arguably be far more straightforward given RDR2 already runs on more “modern” hardware. While it would seem that Rockstar is hyper-focused on all things GTA 6 at this point, an RDR2 upgrade ahead of its launch wouldn’t be entirely unprecedented. Rockstar has historically used remasters, ports, and next-gen upgrades to keep older games commercially active between major flagship launches.
Fans are also seeing the May 19 PS Plus RDR2 addition as the last opportunity for a major Rockstar announcement that isn’t GTA 6-related before the upcoming Take-Two earnings call on Thursday, May 21, even if it does seem unlikely. “May 19th is literally the last chance before the call,” says The GodFather, while JR argues “we’re not getting anything this side of the earnings call. Either it’s getting delayed again or it won’t be until July given they’ll probably release the Summer update in June.”
Rockstar fans are literally begging for something to tide them over to GTA 6‘s November launch, with gamers like ShiverSeal97 saying, “Please Rockstar, give us a current gen 60 fps upgrade for PS5.” Gamers like leaderofthepatriots point out that “they made RDR1 free for PS Plus Extra on the same day the PS5 version was released last December. I’m just saying there may be a chance.”
Whether we actually get any form of current-gen upgrade announcement from Rockstar in the next week remains to be seen, but no matter how low the chances are of it happening, fans can universally agree that a Red Dead Redemption 2 60fps upgrade would be an incredible way to hype players up before Grand Theft Auto 6 drops this fall.
