IPL 2026: Virat Kohli opens up on muted century celebration after hundred against Kolkata Knight Riders

The Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur bore witness to a masterclass in modern T20 batting on Wednesday. In the 57th match of IPL 2026, the legendary Virat Kohli silenced his critics and steered Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to a clinical six-wicket victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). With this win, RCB have officially ascended to the top of the IPL table, signalling their dominance in the business end of the tournament.

Virat Kohli explains the calm reaction to his century against KKR

While the cricketing world erupted as Kohli reached his record-extending ninth IPL century, the man himself remained remarkably composed. At 37, Kohli proved that age is merely a number, hammering an unbeaten 105 off just 60 balls. However, his muted celebration raised eyebrows, given his historically fiery persona.

Addressing the broadcaster after being named Player of the Match, Kohli admitted to feeling the weight of recent failures. After enduring consecutive ducks in his previous two outings, the veteran opener confessed to a rare bout of anxiety.

The fact that I didn’t get many runs in the last two games eats me up. I know I’m hitting the ball well, but when you don’t create an impact for the team, it bothers you,” Kohli stated.

Explaining his stoic reaction to the milestone, his first IPL ton since 2024, Kohli emphasized that the team’s position was his primary focus.

The celebration was not a big one because we know the importance of the points. It is a conscious effort to contribute more,” he remarked. He further noted that “pressure is a privilege,” suggesting that the nervousness fuelled his focus rather than hindering it. By avoiding extravagant risks and backing his natural ability to find gaps, Kohli orchestrated a chase that looked effortless.

RCB cruise past KKR to an easy win in IPL 2026

Despite a competitive total of 192/4 posted by KKR, the Bengaluru outfit chased it down with five balls to spare, finishing at 194/4. Earlier in the evening, KKR’s innings was built on a solid 71 off 46 balls by Angkrish Raghuvanshi and a late-inning flourish from Rinku Singh, who remained unbeaten on 49 off 29 deliveries. RCB’s bowling spearheads, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood, managed to keep the scoring rate in check during the Powerplay, though KKR found momentum in the middle overs through Cameron Green (32).

The chase, however, was a one-man show for the most part. While Jacob Bethell (15) and Rajat Patidar (11) fell cheaply, Devdutt Padikkal provided a steadying hand with a vital 39 off 27 balls. Their 92-run second-wicket partnership effectively broke the back of the chase.

Kartik Tyagi was the pick of the bowlers for KKR, claiming 3 for 32, but he had no answers for Kohli’s precision. Kohli reached his 50 in 32 balls and accelerated to his 100 in 58 balls, punctuating his innings with 11 fours and 3 towering sixes. With 8 runs required in the final over, Jitesh Sharma (8*) stayed calm alongside Kohli to seal the win in 19.1 overs. This victory not only cements RCB’s playoff credentials but also sees Kohli surpass MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma for the most appearances in IPL history (279), marking a historic night for the King of Indian cricket.
