´Anything can happen´ – Gomez unsure on Liverpool future

Joe Gomez has hinted that his 11-year stint with Liverpool could be coming to an end this summer even though he has one year left on his current deal.

Gomez joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in 2015 for a reported £3.5m transfer fee and has gone on to play a key role for the club under Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot.

The 28-year-old has made 272 appearances in all competitions for the Reds, winning eight major titles including two Premier Leagues and the Champions League in 2018-19.

But injuries have plagued his game time at Anfield, with the central defender restricted to 31 outings in 2025-26, with only 15 coming from the start for Liverpool.

And with Jeremy Jacquet officially arriving from Rennes in the summer, along with Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley’s returns from long-term injuries, opportunities could be limited further for Gomez.

Asked if he had any thoughts on his future, Gomez said: “No. I think anything can happen. I don’t know is the honest answer.

“I’ve only got a year left so I don’t know, but whatever is meant to be will be, I guess.

“But I’m so grateful to have had this time here at this club. I’ll always be grateful to have had 11 years at a place like this. All I can do is be thankful and we’ll see.”

As the current longest-serving player at the club, Gomez could join fellow stalwarts Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson in leaving Anfield at the end of the campaign.

Reports have also suggested that Alisson Becker could return to Serie A with Juventus, leaving only Virgil van Dijk as the sole survivor from Klopp’s peak era in charge.

Liverpool boss Slot, whose future has also been discussed, has said he expects Liverpool’s squad to undergo a “little transition” this summer and nothing as “drastic” as last year.

The Reds are fourth in the Premier League and face Aston Villa on Friday, knowing a win will confirm their spot in the Champions League for next season.
