Fans slam S. Badrinath over insensitive joke about Krunal Pandya’s injury during RCB vs MI clash in IPL 2026

The 2026 Indian Premier League continues to deliver high-octane drama, but the 54th match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at Raipur on May 10 is making headlines for reasons beyond the boundary rope. While the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium witnessed a last-ball thriller, a dark cloud loomed over the broadcast as veteran commentator Subramaniam Badrinath found himself at the center of a massive social media firestorm.

Cricket is often called the ‘Gentleman’s Game,’ but the spirit of sportsmanship was reportedly tested during the Tamil commentary of the RCB vs MI clash. The controversy erupted when RCB’s Krunal Pandya collapsed on the field, visibly clutching his leg in intense pain. As medical staff rushed to the middle, former Indian cricketer Subramaniam Badrinath allegedly made a comment that left viewers horrified.

According to various reports and viral social media clips, Badrinath suggested that instead of receiving medical attention, Pandya should “just be left to die there” so that RCB would lose the match. The sheer insensitivity of the remark, presumably intended as a dark joke regarding the match’s stakes, immediately backfired.

Prominent fan accounts were quick to condemn the veteran. Many described the outburst as “unprofessional” and “disgraceful,” noting that a player’s life and health should never be the punchline of a joke, regardless of team loyalty. Insiders suggested that Badrinath’s co-commentator was visibly stunned into silence before Badrinath attempted to walk back the comment as a jest. However, the apology has done little to soothe the anger of the cricketing community, with many calling for Star Sports to take disciplinary action.

Krunal Pandya lights up IPL 2026 with a match-winning blitz as RCB edge past MI in a thriller

Ironically, the man at the center of the commentary controversy became the hero of the night. In a match that fluctuated wildly, Royal Challengers Bengaluru pulled off a heist, winning by 2 wickets on the final ball of the 20th over to chase down MI’s target of 167.

Mumbai Indians, batting first, struggled early against a masterclass from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who dismantled the top order. Bhuvneshwar’s figures of 4/23 included the prized wickets of Rohit Sharma (22) and Suryakumar Yadav for a golden duck. MI was rescued by a resilient Tilak Varma, who smashed 57 off 42 balls, and a late surge from Naman Dhir (47), pushing the total to 166/7.

RCB’s chase began in disastrous fashion. Legend Virat Kohli fell for a golden duck to Deepak Chahar, and by the 6th over, RCB was reeling at 39/3. Enter Pandya. Shrugging off the physical discomfort that sparked the commentary row, Pandya played the innings of a lifetime. He bludgeoned 73 runs off just 46 deliveries, laced with 4 fours and 5 towering sixes.

His strike rate of 158.69 kept the required rate under control, even as Corbin Bosch (4/26) threatened to derail the chase with a mid-over hat-trick scare. When Pandya finally fell in the 18th over, the game hung in the balance. It took a composed cameo from the tail and a nerve-wracking final over for RCB to reach 167/8, sealing a victory that keeps their playoff hopes burning bright while leaving the commentary world in a state of deep reflection.
