Elden Ring 2 Splits Gamers Down The Middle

It is hard to believe that it has been four years since Elden Ring launched and took the world by storm, with many considering the hit RPG to be FromSoftware’s magnum opus. Regardless of what you think about FromSoftware’s most recent RPG, there is no denying that it deserves its legendary status, with the game offering us our first open-world Souls game full to the brim with content.

Since its launch, Elden Ring has become something of a cultural phenomenon. Not only did it welcome its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, but a roguelike spin-off titled Elden Ring: Nightreign was also an instant hit. On top of that, a live-action movie inspired by the RPG is currently in production, with fans already treated to the very exciting cast list.

With any hit video game, one question soon follows: will there be a sequel? At the time of writing, an Elden Ring sequel has not been hinted at nor confirmed, with FromSoftware seemingly turning its attention to brand-new releases such as the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods. However, the studio is also no stranger to a sequel. After all, Dark Souls became a trilogy, and a very well received one at that. However, some of its other hit titles, such as Bloodborne, remain a standalone entry. So, will Elden Ring receive the Dark Souls treatment, or remain a single adventure like Bloodborne. At the moment, we just do not know, but that has not stopped fans from speculating the possibility of an Elden Ring sequel over on r/videogames.

“Now that the dust has settled on Shadow of the Erdtree: Does Elden Ring actually need a sequel, or should Miyazaki focus on a brand-new IP for the 2027-2028 cycle?” One user asked, kicking off the discussion. “Elden Ring is arguably one of the greatest achievements in gaming history, but the lore feels fairly complete after the DLC. At least it gives a complete story overall. On one hand, a sequel could refine the open-world mechanics even further. On the other hand, Miyazaki’s greatest strength has always been reinventing himself (from Souls to Bloodborne to Sekiro).”

With over 200 comments racked up, it is safe to say that Elden Ring fans have their own thoughts on a potential sequel. “I’m so FromSoft “pilled” that I’ll be OK with anything to be honest. (More Armored Core, I beg),” one user shared, bagging themselves the top comment. Another agreed, adding, “Reading posts like this makes me realize I’m in a cult because whatever they give me, I’ll take it. New IP, ER 2, Bloodborne Remake, Sekiro DLC, AC 7, DS3 Remastered, King’s Field reboot. You f**king name it.”

Another user shared what they think to be an unpopular opinion, saying, “Apparently an unpopular opinion, but I wouldn’t mind an Elden Ring trilogy in the vein of Dark Souls.” However, another user felt differently, adding, “FromSoft needs to make more unique games like Sekiro/AC6 and give souls a break.”

For now, FromSoftware fans can look forward to The Duskbloods, which is set to launch on the Nintendo Switch later this year. What happens next, however, remains to be seen.
