As the battle for the top four intensifies, the 53rd match of IPL 2026 brings us a high-octane clash between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday. While the cricketing world was buzzing about LSG’s recent resurgence after their thrilling victory against RCB just days ago on May 07 at Lucknow, all eyes were on the team sheet today. Fans and analysts alike were left searching for one name: the pace sensation Mayank Yadav.
Despite his status as one of the most lethal weapons in the Lucknow arsenal, Mayank’s absence from the starting XI in this crucial afternoon fixture has raised eyebrows.
Why Mayank Yadav is not playing against CSK in today’s match?
The mystery regarding Mayank’s absence was clarified during the toss by LSG skipper Rishabh Pant. While CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and opted to bowl first in the scorching Chennai heat, Pant revealed that the team is prioritizing consistency and tactical balance as they fight to stay alive in the tournament.
Speaking at the toss, Pant emphasized the team’s commitment: “We would have bowled first as well. We’re definitely trying to look at each and every match from here… we’ve got to be consistent and look to play good cricket. We had our moments in a lot of games but we couldn’t finish it up. As I said in Mumbai, we’re going to give our 200% regardless of every match.”
The core reason for Mayank’s exclusion appears to be a mix of tactical rotation and injury management. Pant confirmed two major changes, noting that Josh Inglis returns to the side following an injury layoff in the previous game, while the experienced Avesh Khan comes into the XI specifically to replace Mayank. Given Mayank’s history with stress fractures and the heavy workload he carried in the previous match against RCB (where he bowled four high-intensity overs), the management has opted for a cautious approach. On a dry Chepauk surface where variations and experience often trump raw pace, Avesh’s ability to nail yorkers and slower balls was deemed more suitable for the conditions.
