Percy Jackson Could Last An Entire Decade If Disney Lets It

Disney is home to a fantasy series that feels like a perfect combination of Harry Potter and Hercules, and thanks to its source material, it could last a decade if the studio wanted to go that far. Disney is still best known for its movies, mostly its animated ones, through which it has explored a variety of worlds and brought literary works to life. However, Disney has also produced several great TV shows, and recently, thanks to Disney+, it has further stood out with its TV content.

Disney has produced some of the best TV shows of all time, and its presence on that list has only grown thanks to its various acquisitions over the years. Thanks to these, Disney has also been able to revive franchises and give them another chance, as it has done with Percy Jackson. Written by Rick Riordan, the Percy Jackson & the Olympians novel series consists of seven books, with five forming the main series.

After a film duology that wasn’t as well-received as hoped, Percy Jackson was revived as a TV series on Disney+ in 2023. Unlike the movies, the Percy Jackson TV show has been praised by critics, and it’s currently preparing for its third season. If Disney wanted to cover all books in the Percy Jackson series, it would be a 10-year plan, which is doable, but the show could continue even after that.

There Are Other Books Percy Jackson Could Adapt After Season 5

Percy Jackson and the Olympians was released on Disney+ in 2023, and, as the title says, the first season covered the first book in the series. Percy Jackson follows the title character (played by Walker Scobell), a 12-year-old demigod who is accused by none other than Zeus of stealing his thunderbolt. As a result, Percy embarks on a mission to find it and thus restore order to Olympus. The success of season 1 led to a renewal, with season 2 releasing in early 2025.

Season 2 of Percy Jackson, The Sea of Monsters, is based on the second book of the series, where Percy, now back at Camp Half-Blood, learns that it’s being threatened by Kronos, while his best friend and protector, Grover (Aryan Simhadri), has gone missing. This takes Percy on a journey into the title Sea of Monsters to find the Golden Fleece. Now, Percy Jackson was renewed for a third season ahead of season 2’s release, and following the show’s plan, it will adapt the third novel, The Titan’s Curse.

At the time of writing, Percy Jackson has only been renewed for a third season, but if it continues with the success of the previous seasons, it will surely be renewed again. Even if Disney made it to season 5 of Percy Jackson, thus covering the five novels in the main saga, the show could continue beyond that thanks to the remaining two novels: The Chalice of the Gods and Wrath of the Triple Goddess.

There are also the series of The Heroes of Olympus, The Trials of Apollo, and The Nico di Angelo Adventures, through which Disney can further expand the universe of Percy Jackson if the main series continues to be a success.

Disney Ending Percy Jackson Early Would Be Repeating History

The success of Percy Jackson is great news for its future over at Disney+, but streaming platforms have proven to be unpredictable with their original content. Perhaps the challenge for Percy Jackson is to make it beyond season 3, after which it will have to maintain or surpass the quality and success of the first seasons to keep the audience’s interest and, quite possibly, attract new viewers.

If Disney were to cancel Percy Jackson early, it would repeat the fate of the movie adaptations. The Percy Jackson movies were box office hits but not critical ones, and although there were plans for a third movie, it ultimately never happened. The TV show has redeemed the movies and given the novels new life, and thanks to its success so far, it deserves to continue for a couple more seasons.
