Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Boys season 5, episode 6, “Though the Heavens Fall.”
Homelander has never been the biggest of planners throughout The Boys, as he often acts impulsively to get what he wants and worries about the consequences later. Interestingly though, he looks to have something sinister in the works to achieve his god status in season 5, and it involves rounding up as many psychic supes as he can find.
Having finally acquired V-One in The Boys season 5 after Soldier Boy gave him the substance, Homelander is officially immune to the supe virus, meaning he can put his full attention towards becoming idolized by the world. He already has a cult following, but the villain wants more, hence using religion to try to force the public into worshiping him.
He’s already put those who oppose him in internment camps, renamed churches, and has an unreleased Bible dedicated to himself, suggesting Homelander’s quest to become the one true God will take some stopping. Now, his next step appears to involve mindreaders, as Hughie and Starlight found photos of America’s most powerful psychic supes while infiltrating a church.
Starlight noticed their connection right away and questioned what Homelander could want with all of them. Considering he even has Cate Dunlap on this wall of psychic supes despite her defecting from Vought, this is clearly an important part of the Seven leader’s plan, since he usually kills anyone who disobeys him, as evidenced by A-Train and Firecracker’s The Boys season 5 deaths.
So far, the antagonist hasn’t given a reason for needing these unique supes just yet, but given he hopes to transform America and potentially the entire world, these superpowered beings will almost certainly be used to ensure only those faithful to Homelander survive.
Homelander Is Likely Trying To Separate The True Believers From The Liars
The most rational explanation for Homelander gathering as many psychic supes as he can find is so that he can separate his loyal followers from those pretending to worship him. Despite Firecracker’s love and devotion, Homelander knew she was a true Christian deep down, which is why he didn’t hesitate when it came to killing her.
Her death is likely a sign of things to come, and using psychics to read people’s minds is the perfect way of creating a world where he truly is a god. Anyone who isn’t 100% faithful to him will likely be killed or potentially used in twisted ways as a punishment for not falling in line sooner.
Either way, the end goal is the same: complete, unwavering loyalty. The more of these supes he can assemble, the more people he can test, and given he’ll likely want to expand beyond just America regarding his vision, it’ll likely take all psychics alive to go through several billion people.
While it’s possible this was part of Sister Sage’s plan for Homelander in season 5 before betraying the Seven leader, everything points towards this extreme move being inspired by his own self-obsession, making it one of his more strategic ideas so far.
Considering he hates those who show false adoration, these physics can prove once and for all who genuinely admires him, and who is simply pretending to be loyal out of fear. Once the liars are eliminated, and it’s just his true believers left, Homelander will have the society he dreams of, even though it’s unlikely to make him happy.
Does Homelander Have An Even Bigger Plan In Mind For The Psychics?
Although Homelander clearly only wants those devoted to him around, his use of psychics could go beyond simply wanting to find out who is faithful. We know Cate’s powers allow her to manipulate and control minds, rather than just read people’s thoughts, meaning supes like her could brainwash the entire world into following Homelander.
Initially, he talked about bathing in the blood of non-believers, but perhaps he’s found a way to ensure his following is so big that even those who evade him won’t be able to live a normal life. Therefore, this means The Boys would have to take out a whole host of psychic supes before even beginning to tackle Homelander properly.
Even if it’s manufactured, Homelander would love to have the whole world singing his praises and genuinely mean it. He’d even go as far as beginning to make the psychics manipulate each other until there’s only a handful not drinking the Kool-Aid, and there’s every chance he would kill them if they rebelled at any point.
After acquiring V-One, his mindset may swiftly change, but if anything, it’s only going to make him more wrathful. Assuming this is the case, Homelander’s plan with the psychic supes in The Boys will only get more intense, creating a thrilling finale to season 5 that could go in all kinds of directions.
