After Alan Ritchson’s hard-hitting, fast-firing, cat-poop-coffee-drinking exploits in 2025, all eyes are on Reacher season 4 to continue delivering the goods. Since debuting in 2022 as an antidote to the unspectacular Tom Cruise movies, Prime Video’s Reacher has established itself as one of the platform’s true gems, an honor demonstrated by Reacher‘s expansion into a bona fide franchise via the upcoming Neagley spinoff.
Between the impending premiere of a second show and Alan Ritchson’s steady progression into a Hollywood leading man, it looked like the wait for Reacher season 4 might’ve been longer than usual. Quite the contrary, as it turns out. Ritchson himself has confirmed Jack Reacher’s next outing will drop sometime in 2026, while Neagley remains without a release date at the time of writing.
Reacher‘s 2026 return is great news for viewers, and can maintain the show’s impressive momentum following three strong seasons on Prime Video. There is, however, another exciting consequence of Reacher season 4 airing this year: it creates an almighty, 5-man battle royal between the very biggest action thriller heroes currently in the world of streaming.
Sticking with Prime Video, the Amazon service released Cross season 2 between February and March in 2026. Starring Aldis Hodge, the series draws from James Patterson’s novel series and involves the titular detective struggling against his past while solving grisly crimes across Washington in the present. May 2026 will see the arrival of Jack Ryan: Ghost War, the feature-length next chapter in Prime Video’s Jack Ryan TV series starring John Krasinski and based on Tom Clancy’s book character. Effectively serving as a stealth season 5, Jack Ryan: Ghost War reignites Amazon’s so-called Battle of the Jacks between Ryan and Reacher.
But the battlefield also extends to Netflix. Gabriel Basso’s The Night Agent aired its third season in February 2026, continuing to adapt Matthew Quirk’s story of an FBI agent foiling intricate conspiracies that threaten the United States. A mere two months later came Netflix’s TV reboot of Man of Fire. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II took over from Denzel Washington as John Creasy, the former Special Forces operative originally created by A. J. Quinnell.
Alongside Reacher, the above shows represent the biggest and best action thriller series currently dominating the streaming landscape. All are based on books, and all are led by heroic, tortured protagonists seeking revenge, justice, and sometimes a bit of both. A degree of crossover is to be expected, especially given the saturation of the genre, but all five shows releasing new seasons within a single year turns 2026 into an all-out scrap for streaming supremacy, not just between the formidable quintet of Reacher, Ryan, Cross, Sutherland, and Creasy, but between Prime Video and Netflix also.
Who Reacher’s Biggest Rival Will Be In 2026’s Big Action Thriller Showdown
Reacher‘s popularity and presence puts him in pole position to come out top in 2026’s five-horse race, and a quick look at how his rivals have fared so far reveals which action thriller juggernauts pose a genuine threat to his reign.
Man on Fire‘s first run on Netflix earned a middling reception, coming out at just 62% on Rotten Tomatoes and failing to live up to its literary and big screen predecessors. As Netflix’s other big 2026 action thriller series, The Night Agent season 3 bounced back from a divisive sophomore year by scoring an impressive 86% critics’ score and delivering arguably its best string of episodes yet.
Cross season 2 ended up being more of a mixed bag, with a mighty 95% critics’ score dampened by 55% from audiences, which leaves only Jack Ryan. Scores across the show’s four seasons typically averaged around the 70s and 80s, giving Jack Ryan: Ghost War a solid foundation to build upon. At the same time, a feature-length movie puts Krasinski and co. in an entirely different realm. It’s an unknown quantity; Jack Ryan could benefit from the streamlined runtime or collapse faster than the Chris Pine film.
For comparison, all three of Reacher‘s seasons have been highly acclaimed, with no critics’ score falling below 92%. Barring a massive collapse in quality, it’s difficult to see Reacher failing to surpass 2026’s output from The Night Agent, Cross, and Man on Fire. That means the real danger comes from Jack Ryan, whose switch to a more cinematic style might just provide the edge needed to outshine Jack Reacher. One thing is almost certain: 2026’s king of streaming action thrillers will be a Jack of some sort.
