The Devil Wears Prada 3 Story Ideas & Timeline Debated By Stars

The Devil Wears Prada 2 isn’t even in theaters yet, but the cast of the highly anticipated sequel is already thinking about what might happen in a potential third film.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley, new cast members Simone Ashley, Caleb Hearon and Helen J. Shen, who play Amari Mari, Charlie and Jin Chao, respectively, discussed the possibility of returning for a threequel.

Hearon speculated that it might not materialize until 2046, referring to the fact that it took 20 years after the first film for The Devil Wears Prada 2 to get made, but Ashley was adamant that “it’s not going to take 20 years.”

Caleb Hearon: “Oh, my gosh. In 2046…”

Simone Ashley: “It’s not going to take 20 years! It’s not.”

As far as a hypothetical Devil Wears Prada 3 storyline is concerned, Hearon hopes that he, Ashley and Shen get to reunite. “I hope we run Runway or something together,” he said. “It’d be fun.” Shen is fully on board with seeing Miranda Priestly’s first assistant, Amari, in charge. Ashley, who plays Amari, believes that outcome is “inevitable.”

Caleb Hearon: “I don’t know, but I hope it’s the three of us doing something together. I hope we run Runway or something together. It’d be fun.”

Helen J. Shen [when asked if Amari should be put in charge]: “Yes, come on.”

Simone Ashley: “It’s inevitable. Let’s see what happens.”

Shen added that no matter what the storyline ends up being, she just wants to get the chance to “hang out on set” with her fellow cast members because she’s been having “such a great time” working with them and promoting The Devil Wears Prada 2 together.

Helen J. Shen: “I’ve been having such a great time doing all of this with you guys. All I want to do is hang out on set. So, wherever we are, I’ll be there.”

The Devil Wears Prada 2 reunites Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci two decades after starring in the first film, which became a pop culture phenomenon and introduced several iconic quotes, like “Gird your loins,” “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking,” “You have no style or sense of fashion” and “That’s all.”

The Devil Wears Prada, which is based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel of the same name, was a hit at the box office, grossing $326 million against a reported $35 million budget. The film was also a hit with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, where it’s Certified Fresh with a score of 75%.

Now 20th Century Studios is just days away from releasing The Devil Wears Prada 2, which also stars Justin Theroux, Kenneth Branagh, Tracie Thoms, Lucy Liu, Patrick Brammall, Pauline Chalamet, B. J. Novak, Rachel Bloom and Lady Gaga.

The first film ended with Hathaway’s character, Andy Sachs, landing a new job after working at Runway and putting up with her boss Miranda Priestly’s demanding and scathing behavior. Miranda was based on Anna Wintour, who was Vogue‘s editor-in-chief at the time. Streep has since revealed that her interpretation of the character was influenced by Mike Nichols and Clint Eastwood.

Now, 20 years later, the two characters are back in each other’s lives amid a very different media environment.

Runway is struggling to survive in the current digital and social media era, but Blunt’s Emily Charlton might be the key to its success. The sequel is expected to have a massive opening weekend, which could make a third film much more likely to be greenlit.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 will be released in theaters on Friday, May 1, 2026.
