Blumhouse’s The Mummy Box Office Debut Just Barely Outdoes Their 2025 Universal Monster Flop Wolf Man

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy has proven that Blumhouse’s Universal Monster reboots aren’t cursed at the box office.

Blumhouse’s Mummy reboot, which was directed by Evil Dead Rise‘s Lee Cronin, is the third adaptation of a classic Universal Monster franchise that the company has been involved in (though this time it was made in collaboration with Atomic Monster and New Line and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, with no involvement from Universal). While 2020’s The Invisible Man was a hit, grossing $144.5 million against a reported budget of $7 million, when Blumhouse and the movie’s writer-director Leigh Whannell reteamed for 2025’s Wolf Man, it severely underperformed, earning $35.2 million against a reported $25 million.

Per Variety, as of Saturday morning, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is projected to earn a 3-day total of $12 million by the end of its debut weekend at the domestic box office. This will ultimately not prove to be enough for it to debut any higher than No. 3 on the chart for the weekend, as it is expected to land below the holdover hits The Super Mario Bros. (No. 1 in its third weekend with a projected $30 million haul) and Project Hail Mary (No. 2 in its fifth weekend with $18.5 million).

While these opening weekend projections see Lee Cronin’s The Mummy landing below the $28.2 million 3-day debut of The Invisible Man, the movie is nevertheless set to exceed Wolf Man‘s debut of $10.9 million. This places the 2026 horror movie closer to potentially breaking even than the 2025 feature, as the new movie’s budget is slightly smaller, reportedly hitting $22 million. Because movies often need to earn back two and a half times their budgets in theaters, this likely puts The Mummy‘s estimated break-even point somewhere around $55 million.

It remains to be seen how the new Universal Monsters reboot performs in the long run. If it has a similar trajectory to Wolf Man, it is possible that it will leg out to a worldwide gross of roughly $39 million worldwide, which would see it falling considerably short of its estimated theatrical break-even point.

However, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy reviews show that it has the potential to become more of a word-of-mouth success. While both it and Wolf Man have thoroughly Rotten scores from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with 45% and 48% respectively, it is performing much better with audiences. The Mummy‘s current Popcornmeter score of 77% far exceeds Wolf Man‘s 54%. Its CinemaScore of C+ (which is not uncommon for a new horror movie) is also slightly higher than Wolf Man‘s C-.

Ultimately, it does not seem like Lee Cronin’s The Mummy will be joining the roster of 2026 horror hits. While the first four months of the year have seen some titles in the genre underperform (including 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple and Ready or Not 2: Here I Come), they have been marked by numerous successes, including Scream 7, Sam Raimi’s Send Help, and Markiplier’s Iron Lung. However, that roster could be joined by more successes before long, as May 2026 has a robust slate of promising horror releases, including Hokum, Passenger, and Obsession.
