IPL 2026: Why Shimron Hetmyer is not playing today’s SRH vs RR match? Riyan Parag explains

Rajasthan Royals (RR) surprised many fans during their IPL 2026 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium by leaving out one of their key finishers, Shimron Hetmyer. The West Indian batter, known for his ability to turn games around in the final overs, was missing from the playing XI, sparking curiosity and debate among viewers.

SRH vs RR: Here’s why Shimron Hetmyer is not playing today’s match

With RR enjoying a strong start to the season, having won all four of their matches so far, the decision appeared tactical rather than forced. At the toss, captain Riyan Parag addressed the change and made it clear that Hetmyer’s absence was part of a planned rotation strategy.

“We’ve got two changes. Brijesh steps out and Tushar Deshpande comes in. Hetty gets a rest and Pretorius makes his debut,” he said.

This confirmed that the decision wasn’t due to any injury concern but rather a move to manage workload and explore bench strength. In a long tournament like the IPL, teams often rotate players to keep them fresh for the crucial later stages, and Rajasthan seem to be following that approach.

Despite not being in the starting XI, Hetmyer hasn’t been completely ruled out of the match. He has been named in the impact substitutes list, which means he could still feature later depending on the match situation. However, with a debutant brought into the lineup, it is more likely that the team intends to give Hetmyer a complete break.

So far in IPL 2026, Hetmyer has had a relatively quiet run compared to his usual standards. In four matches, he has scored 58 runs at an average of 19.33, with a strike rate of 141.46. While those numbers aren’t poor, they fall short of the explosive impact he is known for. This could also have influenced the team’s decision to rotate him out for this game.

Lhuan-dre Pretorius debuts as RR look to maintain winning momentum

Hetmyer’s absence has opened the door for young South African batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who makes his IPL debut in this match. The 21-year-old is known for his aggressive batting style and will be eager to make the most of this opportunity on a big stage.

Pretorius joins fellow South Africans Donovan Ferreira and Nandre Burger in the Rajasthan Royals setup, adding an interesting dynamic to the team’s middle order. With the Royals already performing well, this debut gives the management a chance to test their squad depth while maintaining a competitive edge.

Apart from this change, Rajasthan also made another adjustment to their playing XI. Tushar Deshpande returned to the side, replacing Brijesh Sharma. Deshpande’s ability with the new ball strengthens the pace attack, which already includes experienced names like Jofra Archer, Sandeep Sharma and Nandre Burger.

On the other side, SRH came into the match looking to bounce back after a narrow defeat in their previous outing. They stuck with the same playing XI, relying on their strong top order featuring Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen to deliver.
