IPL 2026: KKR’s pace attack gains edge after Matheesha Pathirana receives NOC from Sri Lanka Cricket

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have received a massive shot in the arm as Sri Lankan speedster Matheesha Pathirana has officially been granted his No Objection Certificate (NOC) by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). This development paves the way for the ‘Baby Malinga’ to join the KKR camp in Chennai, providing a much-needed lifeline to a franchise currently gasping for air in the bottom half of the points table. Pathirana, who was acquired for a staggering INR 18 crore in the 2026 mini-auction, is expected to link up with the squad ahead of their high-stakes clash against Chennai Super Kings on April 14.

Matheesha Pathirana cleared to join KKR after receiving NOC from Sri Lanka Cricket

Pathirana’s arrival couldn’t be more timely. The 23-year-old pacer was sidelined during the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 after sustaining a leg injury just four deliveries into his spell against Australia. His fitness had been a point of contention for KKR fans, especially after the team lost key Indian seamers Harshit Rana and Akash Deep to injuries earlier in the season. With the SLC medical team finally giving the green light, Pathirana is set to bring his lethal death-bowling expertise to a side that has struggled to contain runs in the final overs.

KKR’s decision to break the bank with an 18-crore bid, stunning Pathirana’s former franchise, CSK, in the process – underscores the value they place on his unique sling-arm action. During his tenure with Chennai, Pathirana was a revelation, scalping 47 wickets in 32 matches. His standout 2023 season, where he picked up 19 wickets, remains the benchmark for his potential impact. In a season where KKR has lacked a genuine X-factor at the death, Pathirana is likely to walk straight into the playing XI, replacing struggling overseas options to partner with the likes of Blessing Muzarabani.

Desperate times for KKR: Can the new recruit halt the dismal run?

The Knight Riders are currently enduring one of their most dismal starts in IPL history. As of mid-April, KKR languishes at the bottom of the points table, remaining the only team yet to register a single victory in the 19th edition of the tournament. Their solitary point came from a rain-abandoned fixture against the Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens, where play was halted with KKR at 25/2. Beyond that, the narrative has been one of missed opportunities and tactical failures.

Captain Ajinkya Rahane is under immense scrutiny as the team has suffered three consecutive defeats against Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants. Even Cameron Green, the most expensive overseas player in the league’s history, has struggled to find his rhythm, failing to provide the explosive all-round contributions KKR expected. With the bowling unit leaking runs and the top order appearing fragile, the pressure is mounting. The upcoming battle at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium against CSK is a ‘must-win’ scenario; another loss would not only dampen morale but could realistically push the playoff spots out of reach before the halfway mark of the season. KKR fans are now pinning their hopes on Pathirana to deliver a ‘magic spell’ and spark a mid-season revival.
