Brentford missed out on moving into the top six.
Igor Thiago scored an historic double but Brentford were denied a crucial win in the race for European football as Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s 91st-minute equaliser earned Everton a 2-2 draw in West London.
The Bees needed just three minutes to take the lead, Thiago becoming the first Brazilian to score 20 goals in a Premier League season as he converted from the penalty spot after Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford tripped up Kevin Schade.
Everton levelled midway through the first half as Beto headed home from Idrissa Gana Gueye’s looping cross.
Brentford remained the more threatening side, though, with Pickford forced to make a brilliant save to deny Mathias Jensen, and he was required to produce more heroics to keep out Dango Ouattara’s effort after Schade headed off the crossbar.
The hosts hit the bar again through Nathan Collins’ second-half header, but their lead was restored as Thiago diverted home Michael Kayode’s outside-of-the-boot effort with his thigh.
His brace saw Thiago become the first Brentford player to score more than 20 goals in a top-flight season since David McCulloch in the 1937-38 campaign.
Yet Everton showed their resilience once again as they were rewarded for a spell of late pressure when Dewsbury-Hall arrowed home after Iliman Ndiaye had seen an effort blocked by Kayode.
Brentford miss out on the chance to leapfrog Chelsea into sixth, as they remain a point behind their neighbours and level on points with Everton.
Burnley edge closer to drop with Brighton defeat
Brighton and Hove Albion are only two points off the top six after they maintained their excellent run of form by pushing Burnley closer to relegation with a 2-0 win at Turf Moor.
Mats Wieffer opened the scoring for the Seagulls when he turned home Pascal Gross’ left-wing cross at the far post.
Burnley looked to have levelled through Bashir Humphreys, who converted on the rebound after Bart Verbruggen failed to handle James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick. However, VAR ruled that Humphreys had strayed offside by a very tight margin.
The hosts kept pushing in search of a leveller, but instead they were dealt a hammer blow.
Ward-Prowse was at fault as he was dispossessed in his own box by Kaoru Mitoma, allowing Wieffer to hammer home and settle the contest.
Burnley remain 12 points adrift of safety with six games to play and appear destined for an immediate return to the Championship.
