Grand Theft Auto 6 developer Rockstar Games has dealt with some major leaks over the years, and another one might now be just around the corner. Major GTA 6 leaks first happened in 2022, and details of previous games like Red Dead Redemption 2 also breached confinement on multiple occasions.
This time, the hacking group ShinyHunters claims to have accessed confidential Rockstar information through Anodot, an AI monitoring tool used by Rockstar, as reported by The Cyber Sec Guru. ShinyHunters is demanding a ransom by April 14, threatening to leak data if the ransom isn’t paid. Rather than breaching Rockstar directly, ShinyHunters apparently gained access to authentication tokens in Anodot’s system, allowing them to access Rockstar’s data with legitimate credentials.
Hackers Threaten To Release Rockstar Data
While plenty of GTA 6 fans are eager to hear any news about the game, the ShinyHunters breach isn’t likely to be the kind of leak that fans want. Rather than material from the game itself, ShinyHunters presumably has access to corporate data like financial records and contracts. This could still tease certain aspects of the upcoming game, but the fallout for Rockstar would likely only complicate the run-up to the release of GTA 6.
As for consumer risks, The Cyber Sec Guru reports that “there’s no evidence so far that individual player passwords or payment details were accessed,” but recommends taking this as a sign to enable two-factor authentication on Rockstar Social Club accounts.
This Could Be Trouble For GTA 6
So far, Rockstar and publisher Take-Two Interactive haven’t commented publicly on ShinyHunters’ claims. Even if no updates are provided, the situation should become clearer when ShinyHunters’ deadline of April 14 rolls around. A breach of information could open up Rockstar to plenty of legal trouble, as well as providing a new source of concern for both investors and fans.
In the past, Rockstar has taken leaks seriously, and the 18-year-old behind the major 2022 leaks was ultimately sentenced to an indefinite hospital order after demonstrating an intent to continue hacking. Rockstar will presumably be examining legal maneuvers in the wake of ShinyHunters’ claims, but for the moment, the individuals behind the claimed crime remain anonymous.
Assuming this all blows over, Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to finally hit its marketing stride this summer, as suggested in Rockstar’s most recent earnings report. Following a series of delays, the game appears to still be on track for its currently planned release date of November 19, 2026.
