The OG Far Cry Returns With An Excellent New-Gen Remaster, Thanks To Fans

Over 20 years since the series’ inception, the original Far Cry games were an absolute blast to play on release, with some of the later entries like Far Cry 3 still being praised to this very day. While there’s been plenty of debate about where the best starting point is for new players of the series, a recent fan-made remaster makes the original game even more accessible than ever.

Created by markuschindris on ModDB, the fan-made project titled FC26 aims to improve the original Far Cry‘s visuals, gameplay, and atmosphere to try and help it compare with the newer entries in the series. While the project might not be the massive remake some fans were hoping for, the fan-made remaster is easily one of the best ways to experience the original game.

The OG Far Cry Is Back And Better Than Ever

In an effort to add more atmospheric visuals to the experience, FC26 even incorporates foliage that reacts to player movement, more realistic weather effects, and plenty of enhanced visuals to make it feel like a fully-fledged remaster.

It isn’t just visuals that are getting a major facelift in this fan-made project either, as the mod also adds brand-new missions that veteran players can experience for the first time. Even without the added content, FC26‘s bug fixes and optimization improvements streamline the experience to make it much more reliable to get through.

While we finally got next-gen updates for Far Cry 3 and Blood Dragon after years of waiting, there’s still no official word on any remakes for the original games that made the series what it is, or even a new sequel to look forward to aside from some vague rumors that Far Cry 7 has supposedly started development.

Far Cry 26 Is By Fans, For Fans

Given that there’s still no word on either project, it seems like fan-made projects will still be the best way to go when it comes to keeping the Far Cry series alive today. Although there have been some reports about FC26 causing additional issues with softlocking or difficulties getting it running, the reception has still been fairly positive, with the issues hopefully being ironed out to become a definitive experience.

While there are more than a few games to scratch your Far Cry itch, it really is tough to beat the actual experience itself, with the original Far Cry games still being worth checking out if you’re a fan of the series and are looking for an excuse to see where it all started, or simply want to revisit for a splash of revitalized nostalgia.
