Train to Busan director, Yeon Sang-ho, is making a highly anticipated return to the world of zombies with his upcoming movie, Colony.

Colony centers on a biotechnology conference that spirals out of control when a lethal virus begins to spread among attendees. As the infection mutates rapidly, those exposed undergo terrifying transformations, plunging the facility into chaos. Authorities are forced to take extreme measures, sealing off the building and trapping survivors inside as they struggle to navigate the escalating nightmare. The story promises a claustrophobic, high-stakes scenario that is a cross between body horror and psychological thriller.

The first official details about Colony’s premiere have now been unveiled, offering a glimpse into what promises to be a tense and unsettling project as Cannes releases brand-new images. It has been confirmed that the movie will debut during the Cannes Film Festival’s Midnight Screening. This section is traditionally reserved for artistic horror, thriller, action, and fantasy genre films.

Colony will be part of an impressive lineup of genre films premiering at Cannes this year. Among them are Her Private Hell from Nicolas Winding Refn and Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma by Jane Schoenbrun. Together, these films will represent the festival’s continued support for unconventional cinema.

Leading the cast of Colony is Gianna Jun, who is known for her roles in action films. Koo Kyo-hwan, who previously collaborated with Yeon in Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula, will also star in the upcoming horror film. They are joined by Ji Chang-wook and Shin Hyun-been.

The project marks another major step in Yeon Sang-ho’s continued exploration of infection-based horror, a subgenre he helped popularize on a global scale with Train to Busan. The film was praised for combining fast-paced action with emotional storytelling and social commentary, elements that have become synonymous with his work. In Colony, Yeon appears to be shifting toward a more contained environment, trading a moving train for an inescapable, quarantined facility. This change in setting could allow for a more intimate focus on character development.

Sang-ho’s Train to Busan follows Seok-woo (Gong Yoo) and his young daughter (Su-an Kim Su-an) traveling on a high-speed train when a sudden zombie outbreak erupts. As the infection spreads rapidly through the train cars, passengers are forced to fight for survival while trying to reach safety, all as the outside world descends into chaos. The film also stars Ma Dong-seok (Sang-hwa), Kim Su-an (Soo-an), Kim Eui-sung (Yon-suk), and Jin-hee (Ahn So-hee).

Colony will debut at the Cannes Film Festival.
