Steam has plenty of new hardware on the way in 2026, but the company has been quieter about the inevitable successor to the Steam Deck. While the original Steam Deck model released over four years ago, Valve has established a desire to avoid rendering it obsolete too quickly, meaning that a 2026 launch was always unlikely. The latest leak, however, has fans concerned about how long they might have to wait.
According to insider KeplerL2 on NeoGAF, the Steam Deck 2 was planned for a 2028 release, but could end up being delayed due to “the whole RAM/NAND situation.” This concern refers to the recently skyrocketing prices of memory and storage, which have been heavily affected by their heavy demand in AI data centers.
Steam Deck 2 Might Release Later Than 2028
NeoGAF user Slimboy Fat suggests that the situation looks grim, arguing that there may be “nothing on the horizon” that fits the hardware requirements Valve would like for a Steam Deck successor. Diffusionx, meanwhile, argues that Valve could be “out of the hardware game for the foreseeable future” thanks to the difficulty caused by the current market.
At the moment, it’s also difficult to know exactly how hardware prices will develop in the next couple of years. KeplerL2 suggests that there could be a silver lining, though. The Steam Deck 2 won’t use a “semi-custom SoC” (system on a chip), unlike console alternatives, so a delay might end up resulting in “better specs” once it does release.
There Are Other Options In The Meantime
If 2028 truly is the best case scenario, fans who have been waiting for a Steam Deck 2 might have to settle for a different alternative in the meantime. There’s always the original Steam Deck, for those who haven’t yet invested, but all three models are currently out of stock. The Nintendo Switch 2 provides a new high-power alternative that significantly outstrips the original Switch’s capabilities. Other companies, like ASUS and Lenovo, have also developed their own versions of handheld PC hardware, including the Xbox-branded ROG Xbox Ally from ASUS.
In the meantime, Valve is setting up a big year with the planned release of the Steam Machine, a new Steam Controller, and the Steam Frame wireless VR headset. Despite being a company that makes billions on software distribution, Valve is once again going full-tilt into the hardware market, and the Steam Deck 2 could be the next in line. Just don’t expect the line to move too quickly.
