Batman has been enjoying a monumental heyday in the past couple of years, due largely to the popularity and success of Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s ongoing Absolute Batman run, which is about to finally transcend from the pages of a comic book and enter the realm of games. However, instead of a video game adaptation, Absolute Batman will be introduced to the world of miniatures board games via Batman: Gotham City Chronicles, specifically in its fourth season expansion.
Per Batman: Gotham City Chronicles’ Gamefound page, Season 4 is the miniatures board game’s latest crowdfunding campaign and is slated to feature content inspired by the harrowing Absolute Batman continuity, as well as “reprints of the core box and previous expansions.” This is incredibly exciting news for anyone who is already a fan of Batman: Gotham City Chronicles and/or Absolute Batman, particularly as it pertains to what this might mean for the future of DC’s Absolute universe.
Absolute Batman Is Making His Gaming Debut
Absolute Batman’s first foray into games is one small step for Batman, one giant leap for DC’s Absolute universe. Of course, anyone who has played and supported Batman: Gotham City Chronicles will be familiar with it as a 2–4 player, scenario-based miniatures board game with Heroes and Villains battling for control of Gotham City. However, it is the inclusion of Absolute Batman that makes Season 4 such a promising expansion in Batman: Gotham City Chronicles.
It is neat to imagine how a handcrafted Batman: Gotham City Chronicles scenario might take shape, but we have already gotten a glimpse at Batman and Black Mask miniatures belonging to the season’s set. Indeed, key features for Batman: Gotham City Chronicles Season 4, as per the board game’s Gamefound page, include:
- Absolute Universe setting.
- Discover new takes on iconic characters and missions set in the critically acclaimed Absolute Batman [universe] by writer Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta.
- True Vertical Gameplay. Fight across rooftops, streets, and interiors with multi-level maps that add height and depth to every decision.
- Multiple Game Modes. Play solo, cooperatively (with an automated Villain system), or in competitive asymmetric skirmishes.
The Absolute Batman Universe Is Terrifying
Absolute Batman’s comic book is a frightening and glorious new ongoing for the DC mythology, much less Batman in general. It seems as if it was only a matter of time before it was adapted to games, and it would be fascinating to explore this canon in a video game, much less a movie or TV show.
Batman: Gotham City Chronicles Season 4’s campaign is active on Gamefound.
