Disney+ has a wide selection of TV shows, and there are some underrated and hidden gems in its fantasy catalog. With platforms like Netflix and Prime Video taking over the world of streaming, it wasn’t going to be long until the big studios joined the fun with their platforms – and in 2019, it was Disney’s turn.
The main hook of Disney+ is all the movies and TV shows produced by the Mouse House, and in the latter, all those shows from Disney Channel. Disney+ also produces its own shows in addition to having licensed content, but with such a wide variety of shows, some great titles are easy to miss, especially in the fantasy genre.
SurrealEstate
Three Seasons
SurrealEstate is a Canadian paranormal drama series created by George R. Olson. SurrealEstate ran from 2023 to 2025 and aired on CTV Sci-Fi Channel in Canada and Syfy in the United States. SurrealEstate follows Luke Roman (Tim Rozon), a real estate agent, but he doesn’t work for any regular real estate agency.
Roman has a connection to the spiritual world, and he’s the head of an agency that deals with haunted houses, which other agents refuse, as they might scare potential buyers away. What Roman and his team do is deal with the supernatural phenomena in these houses so they can be ready for resale. However, there’s also an underlying arc among the individual cases.
SurrealEstate mixes mystery, fantasy, drama, and comedy, with its biggest strengths being its concept, its paranormal procedural approach, and the performances of its main cast. It’s worth noting that, despite its premise, SurrealEstate isn’t heavy on horror.
The Owl House
Three Seasons
Disney+ has a long list of animated TV shows from different genres, and in the fantasy branch, one of its best and most acclaimed titles is The Owl House. Created by Dana Terrace, The Owl House aired from 2020 to 2023 on Disney Channel. The Owl House introduces the audience to Luz Noceda (voiced by Sarah-Nicole Robles), a 14-year-old Dominican-American girl.
Luz ends up in the Demon Realm, where she meets and befriends witch Eda Clawthorne (Wendie Malick) and demon housemate, King (Alex Hirsch). Luz has no magical abilities, but she becomes Eda’s apprentice as she had always dreamed of being a witch. In this new realm, Luz ends up finding a new family.
Alex Hirsch is the creator of one of Disney’s best fantasy shows of all time: Gravity Falls.
The Owl House has been praised by critics for its animation, sense of humor, world-building, voice acting, emotional depth, and the themes addressed in it, such as love, identity, and family. The Owl House made Disney history by being the studio’s first property to feature a same-sex couple in leading roles, non-binary characters, and same-sex parents.
The Villains of Valley View
Two Seasons
The Villains of Valley View is a fantasy comedy TV series created by Chris Peterson and Bryan Moore. The Villains of Valley View aired on Disney Channel from 2002 to 2023, and it follows mad scientist Vic (James Patrick Stuart), who marries electrical supervillain Eva (Lucy Davis). Together they have three children: Jake (Reed Horstmann), Amy (Isabella Pappas), and Colby (Malachi Barton).
The children have different superpowers, and the family was part of a villainous organization called the League of Villains. After Eva confronts the League’s leader, Onyx, the family is forced to go on the run and settle in Valley View, Texas, under a new surname. The family now has to adapt to a normal life while also hiding from the authorities, superheroes, and Onyx’s henchmen.
The Villains of Valley View is mostly aimed at a young audience, and as such, it has a family-friendly tone, over-the-top physical comedy, and exaggerated characterizations. Still, it’s worth watching for those looking for a lighter fantasy comedy show.
Salem
Three Seasons
Salem is a supernatural horror TV series created by Brannon Braga and Adam Simon, inspired by the real Salem witch trials in the 17th century. Salem goes back in time to follow Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery), a powerful witch who controls the witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts. Sibley manipulated the community’s fear while planning to summon the Devil.
However, Sibley comes across a big problem and challenge when her former lover, John Alden (Shane West), returns to town, and he begins to uncover the witches’ role in the trials and their real plans. Salem offers an alternate look at real-life events, with the characters based on real-life people.
What makes Salem worth checking out is its take on the Salem witch trials, complex characters, gothic atmosphere, and its exploration of themes like gender, power, society, love, and witchcraft. Salem has some horror elements, which, mixed with historical drama, make it stand out among other fantasy shows.
Star vs the Forces of Evil
Four Seasons
Star vs the Forces of Evil is an animated fantasy TV show created by Daron Nefcy that aired on Disney Channel and Disney XD from 2015 to 2019. Star vs the Forces of Evil is the story of Star Butterfly (voiced by Eden Sher), the princess of the Butterfly Kingdom in the dimension of Mewni, and thus the heiress to the royal throne.
After causing trouble at home, Star’s parents, King River and Queen Moon, send her to Earth as a foreign exchange student so she can continue her magic training there and learn to control her powers. On Earth, she stays with the family of Marco Diaz (Adam McArthur) and they become best friends, going on different magical adventures together.
Star vs the Forces of Evil has been praised by critics for its animation, concept, and characters, especially Star, who is as strong, energetic, and fun as she is vulnerable and flawed. Star vs the Forces of Evil has character development, emotional depth, and covers relevant themes, such as identity, family, friendship, love, and more.
Renegade Nell
One Season
Renegade Nell is a British historical fantasy action-adventure TV series created by Sally Wainwright. Renegade Nell is set in a fantasy version of 18th-century England and introduces the audience to Nell Jackson (Louisa Harland), who, after being framed for murder, becomes a highwaywoman and the most feared person in the country.
Nell counts on the help of a magical sprite called Billy Blind (Nick Mohammed), and with his help, Nell realizes her destiny is tied to a magical plot against the Queen. With its mix of period drama, action, fantasy, and a strong female lead character, along with a compelling adventure story, Renegade Nell is one of Disney+’s most underrated shows.
Gargoyles
Three Seasons
One of the best Disney animated TV shows is also, ironically, one of the most underrated ones: Gargoyles. Gargoyles aired from 1994 to 1997 for three seasons, but that was more than enough for it to make history as a fan-favorite Disney show. Gargoyles focuses on the title nocturnal creatures that turn into stone during the day.
The gargoyles are cursed to “sleep” a.k.a. be frozen in stone form until the castle “rises above the clouds”, which happens a century later, in 1994, after billionaire David Xanatos buys the gargoyles’ castle and has it reconstructed atop his New York skyscraper. Thanks to this, Goliath and his clan of gargoyles wake up in a completely new world.
With the help of police officer Elisa Maza, the gargoyles become the city’s nighttime protectors, and they also learn the true nature and intentions of Xanatos. Gargoyles stands out for its dark tone, complex and mature storylines appealing to both young and adult viewers, animation, and how it covers themes like prejudice, evil, power, death, and racism.
