With Halloween right around the corner, there are a ton of great horror movies available on streaming right now. This includes several great options on major streaming platforms like Prime Video, Netflix, and HBO Max, as well as the horror-centric Shudder. There is something for every horror aficionado.

These include classic movies with vampires, werewolves, monsters, ghosts, and more, as well as more psychological horror releases. This also includes newer movies, with some 2020s horror releases available to stream. With so many to choose from, we selected five great horror movies streaming right now.

The Howling (1981) – Prime Video

Prime Video offers over 15,000 movies, making it the largest streaming platform for film fans. That also makes it hard to find movies if a person doesn’t have one already in mind, and several iconic classics can end up buried among the options. For horror fans, The Howling is one of those great films they can rediscover.

Released in 1981, this and An American Werewolf in London are the two werewolf movies that revitalized the genre after decades of being mostly ignored, while Wolfen was the third released the same year. While An American Werewolf in London was more of a dark comedy, The Howling was a straight-up scary horror movie.

The cast is great, with the brilliant Dee Wallace (Cujo) in the lead role, and names like Kevin McCarthy and John Carradine in supporting stints. The movie made Joe Dante a big name in Hollywood and led to him eventually getting the chance to make Gremlins three years later.

28 Days Later (2002) – Netflix

28 Years Later was a big hit in 2025, with a sequel set for early 2026. That makes it a perfect time to see where it all started. The first installment, 28 Days Later is currently streaming on Netflix. The film follows one man (Cillian Murphy) waking up in a hospital to learn that an outbreak has ravaged Great Britain.

The storyline sounds a lot like The Walking Dead, but 28 Days Later came out a year before that comic series started publication. Unlike The Walking Dead, there wasn’t quite as much action here, though there were terrifying moments with the infected and human antagonists that were even worse.

The sequel, 28 Months Later, was a clear step down for the franchise, but this original film was a genuine zombie masterpiece. Danny Boyle received acclaim for his direction, and it was his return that helped 28 Years Later regain the respect that the franchise deserves.

Barbarian (2022) – Hulu

Zach Cregger broke out in the horror world with his debut film, Barbarian, in 2022. That horror movie is streaming now on Hulu. It was a surprising debut since Cregger was best known for his role in the sketch comedy group The Whitest Kids U Know, and he proved with this debut feature that he was a director to watch.

Barbarian is a throwback horror movie about a young woman who arrives in Detroit to stay at an Airbnb, only to learn it is double-booked. She reluctantly stays there anyway, but she soon realizes it isn’t her new roommate she needs to fear, but a demonic presence in the underground basement tunnels.

The horror film was a huge success, and Cregger went on to create an even better one in 2025, called Weapons. However, there is a lot to love about his first release, and it deserves a bigger audience as the start of what looks to be an impressive horror film career for the young filmmaker.

Host (2020) – Shudder

Released in 2020, Host was a shockingly great horror movie that takes place entirely on a Zoom call. Streaming now on Shudder, this was a surprising success since there have been other films of the same type, such as the new War of the Worlds, that were colossal failures. However, Host was a critical darling.

Shot during the pandemic, director Rob Savage created a movie in which friends hold a seance over Zoom, only to find a demonic presence pursuing them all. The friends couldn’t do anything but watch their computer screens in horror as they were attacked and killed one by one.

What was most surprising was that, despite the low-fi filmmaking techniques, Host ended up with a massively high 99% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics. It was a masterwork in how to make a horror movie on a limited budget, yet it somehow emerged as a modern-day masterpiece.

Sinners (2025) – HBO Max

Released in 2025 by director Ryan Coogler, Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, who return home to open a juke joint after fleeing Chicago, where they had worked for the mafia. Set in 1932 in Mississippi, the film depicts the evil Ku Klux Klan, rivaled only by the vampires who arrive in town.

The movie was easily one of the best releases of 2025, regardless of genre, and the horror film is streaming now on HBO Max. Jordan is magnificent in his double role as the brothers, who have very different characteristics, and he brings them both to life spectacularly.

The film is not only a great horror film, with the vampires serving as an allegory, but also a love letter to African American music and its place in history. Sinners should be an awards contender at the end of the year, and anyone who hasn’t seen this horror movie can stream it now.
