Alan Ritchson’s sci-fi action movie War Machine doesn’t give viewers the answers to some of its biggest questions, and a few must be addressed if Netflix and Lionsgate make a sequel. So far, the studios have not confirmed plans for the standalone story to continue, but War Machine‘s ending begs for one to happen.
The odds of that happening look optimistic. War Machine has been topping Netflix’s charts worldwide ever since it debuted, making it one of the streamer’s biggest hits of the last year. With more subscribers checking it out, the combination of positive reviews and strong viewership will increase the chances that War Machine 2 happens.
It helps that Ritchson and director Patrick Hughes have War Machine‘s sequel mapped out. And while the exact details of their plans have not been confirmed, they will surely build on the biggest elements and teases in the 2026 action sci-fi film. This will hopefully include answering several burning questions that War Machine doesn’t resolve.

What Is 81’s Name?
This is one question that War Machine directly asks but cannot answer. In the film’s final moments, one of 81’s new Ranger teammates lists off the name of everyone in their helicopter, but neither he nor anyone else aboard ever caught the name of Ritchson’s character. After becoming known only as his number for RASP, War Machine winds up never revealing 81’s name.
It would be kind of funny if the hopeful franchise just never answered this question. He’d be more of a myth, known only as a number, than someone who has a regular human name. This was the intent of Hughes, as he told ScreenRant the decision to not reveal 81’s name came from his love of Westerns:
“I grew up on a very healthy appetite of Westerns, and one of my favorite story forms is that drifting angel archetype, and it’s pale rider. I mean, it’s the man with no name. And I really love that story form.”
While that approach may have worked for a standalone film, it’s less likely a War Machine sequel could go by without revealing 81’s name. He’s already a hero in this war. He might not want all the attention that comes with that, but his name is something others on the battlefield or just even in humanity would want to know. Ritchson’s character can’t just be a number forever.

Are The Machines Sentient Beings Or Controlled By Aliens?
The unidentified alien machines that come to Earth in War Machine don’t get much of any depth. The movie focuses solely on 81’s experience of trying to survive the assault and lead his team to safety. It becomes clear how powerful the machines are and even what can defeat them, but the actual state of them is unclear.
Are they mechs controlled by an alien species or are the machines sentient beings, like a Transformer? Either option is plausible, but War Machine gives no indication as to which one is actually the truth. The answer has no real bearing on the events of the first film, but as humanity launches into a larger war with these alien machines, a proper understanding of the opponent would be necessary.
If there are aliens within the machines or controlling them from afar, what are they like? What are their strengths and weaknesses? Can they survive on Earth without the mech suits? And if these are sentient robots, other questions arise.
Humanity won’t make it far in this war if they don’t know exactly who or what they are up against. That’s why its imperative for War Machine 2 to dive deeper into the machines poised to potentially wipe out humanity.

Why Did The Machines Come To Earth?
Whether these machines are alive or controlled by an alien race, the question of why they came to Earth at all still remains. War Machine makes no attempts to explain this. All it reveals is that hundreds of these machines crash landed on the planet and started killing any humans in sight.
But why? There’s no sign that the machines are looking to harvest life on Earth, taking its intelligent life as slaves, or collecting natural resources. Did they come here just to wipe out humanity for sport? Are they killing the entire human race before going to the next step in their plan for Earth?
Having the humans and machines at war is necessary for War Machine 2‘s story, and while humans fighting back to save themselves would be compelling enough, there eventually has to be some motivation given to the giant robot antagonists. Whether they came to Earth to colonize the planet for themselves or just kill off another species they deemed could be a threat in the future, we need to know that.
The tricky thing with this is we’ll only really learn it if there is some level of communication between the machines and humanity or another avenue to understand the aliens’ motivation. So, we really need the prior question answered to take a step toward knowing why these machines came to Earth. If we get both, War Machine‘s sequel can really give viewers a better understanding of this conflict.

Is 81’s Brother Really Dead?
On one hand, the fate of 81’s brother, played by Jai Courtney, appears pretty cut and dry in War Machine. He is badly injured after the attack in Afghanistan and carried to the nearest Army base by Ritchson’s character, who collapsed from exhaustion 100 yards from the destination. He swears his brother was still alive at that point, but between the time the military got to them and 81 regained consciousness, his superiors told him his brother had died.
War Machine uses the death of 81’s brother as a major motivation for the character. And while the movie doesn’t have any overt teases that suggest otherwise, I’ve been suspicious of his fate from the moment I first watched it. Between casting a notable actor like Courtney in what amounts to such a small role and him dying off-screen (and neither us nor 81 ever seeing the body), something feels off.
I couldn’t tell you why the military would fake the death of 81’s brother or how it would factor into a War Machine sequel, but I can’t shake the feeling that he’s still around somehow. Maybe he was saved as part of a top secret government experiment. After all, he was adamant about doing RASP and wanted to be in the thick of battle. Perhaps his known interest led him to be recruited to a different military group, possibly even one that could have some knowledge about humanity’s newest opponent.
Regardless, the reveal that Courtney’s character is alive would be a huge twist and certainly shock 81, perhaps allowing them to fight side-by-side against these alien machines in the sequel. And if he is, in fact, dead, it’d still be nice for War Machine‘s sequel to double-down on that fact and put these theories to bed, especially if multiple sequels happen.
