A new week means new opportunities to watch amazing movies on Netflix, and there are a few gems that should be at the top of any October watchlist. Netflix continues to dominate the world of streaming with their recognizable original content, and their catalog of classic movies and shows. However, such a wide variety does make it hard to choose.
Assembling the perfect weekly watchlist is tricky, especially when there is so much variety on Netflix. Fortunately, some of the best movies on the streaming platform float to the top, and those should be watched first. Whether it’s exciting action, sidesplitting laughs, or spine-chilling horror, October is the perfect time to stay indoors and watch some great movies on Netflix.
The Gentlemen (2019)
What director Guy Ritchie does best is irreverent comedy and the crime genre, and 2019’s The Gentlemen is a perfect combination of the two. When an American criminal decides to cash-out of his lucrative drug business in the U.K., a myriad of shady characters come out of the woodwork to claim his empire.
A TV spinoff of The Gentlemen is also available on Netflix.
With a cast including Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Grant, and Charlie Hunnam, The Gentlemen is a star-studded affair. Each character brings something new and hilarious to the story, and Ritchie’s ability to direct ensembles is unmatched. The film has something for everyone, and is sure to be a crowd-pleaser the first or even tenth time around.
Night Of The Living Dead (1968)
There’s a reason that George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead is still talked about more than five decades later, and it’s arguably the most influential zombie film ever made. Survivors must band together in an abandoned farmhouse when zombies begin attacking. What plays out is a tense battle as the failings of each character threaten the entire group.
Before Romero, zombies were the product of magic and witchcraft, and his shuffling flesh-eaters were a quantum leap for the genre. The movie itself is a brilliant exercise in tension, with scenes that are still creepy all these years later. As the spooky season rapidly approaches, Night of the Living Dead is a much-watch for any horror hound.
Liar Liar (1997)
Jim Carrey’s meteoric rise in popularity in the 1990s was spurred along by a slew of hits, including the hilarious 1997 gem, Liar Liar. Carrey stars as a workaholic lawyer who suddenly discovers he can’t lie after his son wishes that his father would keep his promises. Unlike Carrey’s more outlandish films, Liar Liar is down-to-earth and heartwarming.
Carrey gives one of his best performances, and the movie has a cute moral lesson even if it’s buried in a lot of jokes. They don’t make comedies like Liar Liar anymore, and it’s a perfect throwback to the 1990s sense of humor. No Netflix binge is complete with a good laugh, and Liar Liar certainly brings those in abundance.
