Peter Parker has not been back on Earth long and is already embroiled in a serial killer’s family tree-related murder spree after having learned that Mary Jane Watson has bonded with the Venom symbiote in the Amazing Spider-Man/Venom: Death Spiral event. So far, this brand-new Spider-Man villain (or villain persona, at least), named Torment, has slain Herman Schultz/Shocker, revealed to be a distant relative of MJ, Eddie Brock’s father, Carl Brock, and a handful of other people who are related to either Peter, MJ, or Eddie.
Thanks to comic book solicitations reliably spoiling what events will unfold, such as knowing prematurely that Peter will bond with the Carnage symbiote to become Spider-Carnage, as depicted on the cover of April’s The Amazing Spider-Man #27, it seems as if the status quo of the book is about to shatter. It is admittedly a little hard to believe, and perhaps fairly presumptuous, but it appears as if The Amazing Spider-Man is beginning to generate excitement for issue #1000 by implicitly teasing that Aunt May will die.
Will Torment Kill Aunt May?
At the end of The Amazing Spider-Man #24—legacy issue #988, Death Spiral part four of nine, released on March 18, 2026—Marvel “Spider-Editor” Nick Lowe writes that “elderly aunts are in more danger than usual until the end of April.” This is almost too blatant a statement to idly toss around, implying that Aunt May is not actually in any peril, but it seems corroborated by Daniele Di Nicuolo’s variant cover for The Amazing Spider-Man #27, which is conveniently scheduled to be released on April 22.
This cover obscures a white-haired individual whom Spider-Man embraces on the floor, and the likeliest deduction is that this is Aunt May, possibly with Peter clinging to her in her last moments as she is kneeling or collapsing. This would surely be a valid excuse for Peter to willingly bond with the Carnage symbiote, wielding it in vengeance against Torment.
That said, the following solicitations, spoiler-rich as they naturally are, suggest that Peter either saves Aunt May in issue #27, or she is never actually in any peril, anyway, because issue #28 will apparently be knotting loose ends regarding Hellgate and Peter’s recent space adventure. If Aunt May was truly going to die in the final issue of the Death Spiral event arc, that would surely require immediate attention in subsequent issues.
That does not mean that Aunt May will not have a secret or two to share, or that she will not have a profound effect on the ongoing run, though, as The Amazing Spider-Man #31, scheduled to be released in June, promises “THE TALK… Peter Parker’s world will never be the same. Don’t miss one of the most pivotal issues in Spider-Man history!” Indeed, “The Talk” is a Spider-Man story naming convention that is reserved for solemn and momentous issues, including The Amazing Spider-Man (1999) #38’s “The Conversation” and Ultimate Spider-Man (2000) #111’s “The Talk.”
The Amazing Spider-Man (2025) #31 obviously has enormous shoes to fill with whatever this new family secret turns out to be, even if Aunt May’s life is not at stake.
How Aunt May Could Resolve Spider-Man’s Status Quo
It is possible that Aunt May could be killed, with this family secret only coming out thereafter, but the chances are low. There is an even lower likelihood, then, of the status quo of Spider-Man’s controversial “One More Day” storyline ever being retconned or rectified.
The theory that readers are praying is true is that Aunt May’s death would potentially disrupt Peter and Mephisto’s deal, resulting in the recovery of that history and knowledge. This is a big stretch, but it would have Spider-Man readers rejoicing endlessly if so.
Maybe Aunt May will reveal in issue #31 that she has known all along about the deal, informing Peter of all he has forgotten. Either way, it will be fascinating to see who else shall die during Death Spiral, and “The Talk” will hopefully be as arresting as it claims to be.
