The undead have been part of pop culture for centuries, with vampires appearing in folk tales before transitioning to novels, TV, and film. Even the most underrated vampires have a special mythology that draws audiences in. Having eternity at their fingertips yet also relying on killing to maintain it poses so many fascinating dilemmas to explore. Vampires have been portrayed as evil bloodsucking monsters and conflicted romantic heroes, and the most powerful movie and TV vampires can manipulate and enthrall.
There’s also so much lore that gets changed depending on what fits a particular story, allowing the vampire characters to develop all kinds of personality traits dependent on their limitations. In some stories, they can’t go out in the daylight, making their lives entirely nocturnal and limited. In others, they can’t enter someone’s premises without being invited, meaning they need to be skilled manipulators or hunters. Through it all, the actors portraying vampires have a broad canvas to make them unique in the best vampire movies and TV shows.

When most people think of vampires, it is more along the lines of either a suave, deadly Dracula or a hideous monster that wants to eat everyone. However, in 2024, the movie Abigail presented a very different vampire. In this movie, a group of criminals kidnap a young girl and take her to a secluded manor for a night. Their leader tells them they will split $50 million when the ransom comes in. However, Abigail reveals that her father won’t pay the ransom and that bad things will happen to the criminals.
That is because Abigail is a vampire child. Alicia Weir was only 14 when she made Abigail, making her performance more impressive because she was brilliant as the young ballet-dancing vampire who was part sweet child and part monstrous killing machine. Even when her father, the crime lord Kristof Lazaar, arrived and proved to be Dracula himself, Abigail was still the scariest vampire in the movie and someone who just carried the film on her small shoulders.

In 1987, three big vampire movies hit theaters, two of which stood the test of time. One was The Lost Boys, a colorful vampire movie made mainly from a young adult template. However, the second was a dark and bloody movie that never used the word vampire but was more of a monster movie than The Lost Boys ever dreamed of being. In Near Dark, a small vampire family travels the Southwest and takes in a new member, but they make his life a living hell.

What Near Dark Took From The Original Dracula
1987 vampire movie Near Dark presents a creative cure for the undead curse, but it actually traces its roots back to Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel.
The vampires here were all great, with Lance Henricksen impressive as the leader Jesse Hooker and Joshua John Miller creepy as the child vampire Homer. However, the standout here was Bill Paxton as the dangerous and vindictive Severen. He was the stone-cold killer of the group, and he was part of some of the best horror scenes in the film. Paxton was on a roll in his career at the time, also a standout in Aliens, and he brought his high-energy performance and created a vampire that remains a vampire icon to this day.

Remmick (Sinners, 2025)
Played By Jack O’Connell
In 2025, a horror movie arrived that was never even advertised as a vampire flick in the trailers before its release. Directed by Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed), Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, who want to return home to leave their troubled lives behind but find that their hometown has a new evil that is worse than anything they left behind. While the film hinted at 1930s racism in the South, it was vampires who were waiting for the brothers.
Jack O’Connell stars as the main vampire Remmick, and Coogler was able to parallel the idea of gentrification and racism with the idea of vampires turning an entire society into its own coven. This was done in comedies like Vampires vs. the Bronx, but in Sinners, Coogler keeps Sinners as a full-on horror film, with terrifying moments and Remmick wanting to gentrify society by adding in plenty of racists, makes this a battle the brothers have to win in a story that parallels today’s struggles in striking ways.

It is impossible to discuss actors playing vampires without mentioning the man that most actors emulated over the next century. While Nosferatu was the first real vampire movie (which was based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula but changed the name and locations when Stoker’s estate refused to license it at the time), it was Dracula himself who made vampires famous. Bela Lugosi played Count Dracula in the 1931 movie and set the template for what the modern-day vampire should look like.
Everyone from Christopher Lee with Hammer Films to Gary Oldman with the Francis Ford Coppola movie based part of their performance on what Lugosi brought to the role. Three names symbolized Universal Horror Monsters in the classical era: Lugosi as Dracula, Boris Karloff as Frankenstein’s Monster, and Lon Chaney Jr. as The Wolf-Man. There is a reason those three men are horror legends to this day. Without them, the backbone of Universal Horror wouldn’t exist like it does today.

There might not be anything creepier than a child vampire. There have been many options over the years, from Claudia in Interview with the Vampire and Homer in Near Dark to Abigail in Abigail and Ralphie Glick in Salem’s Lot. However, one of the best child vampires in movie history is Eli from the Swedish horror movie Let the Right One In. This film sees Eli as a very old vampire who was turned as a child and needs people to help care for her and bring her what she needs to survive.
The movie is mostly a coming-of-age story for the young boy next door who meets her and becomes her closest friend. Lina Leandersson stars as Eli, someone who becomes a protector for Oskar from his bullies and then relies on him in the end to be her new caretaker. It is easily one of the best modern-day vampire movies and is more than a horror tale, although it has its gruesome moments. There was a good American remake, but the Swedish version is a true masterpiece.

Spike (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, 1997-2004)
Played By James Marsters
The moment Spike crashed into Sunnydale, with his Billy Idol style and untraceable British accent, he was a smash hit with viewers. He added so much to the show, and what was meant to be a guest spot as a mid-level villain turned into a regular role on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. His character is compelling because of the mix of rebellious, anarchic tendencies and the need to be loved and accepted. Even in his fully villainous form, Spike is driven by his love for Drusilla and jealousy of Angelus.

Lestat (Interview With The Vampire, 1994)
Played By Tom Cruise
Having first appeared in Anne Rice’s novel of the same name, Lestat is a highly charismatic and morally ambiguous vampire. His layered personality combines danger and vulnerability with an elegant flair, making him one of the most memorable figures in vampire fiction. Lestat is a captivating character, and he carefully uses his innate magnetism to lure humans and fellow vampires into his hedonistic world. He delights in tormenting others, particularly Louis, after having turned him into a vampire against his will, which emotionally binds the two together.
Tom Cruise navigates this character’s journey from a “seductive vampire” archetype, to mentor and protector, to a cruel antagonist who wants to ruin his former companion’s attempt at happiness. His presence is felt even when he’s not on the screen, as Louis and Claudia (Kirsten Dunst) try to make a life without him. He also has one of the most iconic jump-scares at the end of the film as he reveals himself in the reporter’s car.

With a slightly different origin story than most vampires, Blade, known as the “Daywalker,” straddles the line between humanity and vampirism. Wesley Snipes combines an action-hero intensity with a personal vendetta against vampires. His mother had been turned into a vampire whilst pregnant, which is one of the reasons Blade feels such disdain for the species, despite having some of the same powers they do. A brooding antihero, he vows to protect humanity by any means possible, which often means bloody fights and brutal killings.

I’m Convinced That Wesley Snipes Will Play Blade Again Before Mahershala Ali Joins The MCU
After the MCU Blade movie received a very negative update, I believe that Wesley Snipes will be the only Blade of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga.
Blade is a master swordsman skilled at many different types of combat. With a focus on eliminating the immortals, his morality lies in a slightly gray area. He utilizes his ability to go out during the day to hunt nests and take out the bloodsuckers he so looks down upon. The use of garlic-based explosives and UV-light devices shows the innovation and determination behind his hunting tactics, making Blade one of the more resilient and resourceful vampires around.
He is also a groundbreaking character in both vampire and superhero genres. As one of the first black superheroes to headline a major film franchise, he is firmly in the history books.

Brash, sarcastic, and outspoken, Nadja is one of the more flamboyant of the mockumentary vampires. Completely eccentric, and unapologetically mischievous vampire, she is equal parts glamorous and hilarious. Her tumultuous relationship with Laszlo offers up a lot of chaotic drama, but her biting retorts never fail to steal any scene she’s in. Utilizing the stereotypical Transylvanian accent, Demetriou navigates the modern world with an old-world attitude.
Utilizing the stereotypical Transylvanian accent, Demetriou navigates the modern world with an old-world attitude.
Nadja is the matriarch of the household, and manages to be the boss of a bunch of highly disorganized male vampires. She also promotes women’s empowerment, which is something from the modern world she’s keen to champion. Nadja is undoubtedly one of the funniest and sassiest characters in What We Do in the Shadows. She perfectly embodies the show’s balance of supernatural absurdity and heartfelt comedy, that makes her a joy to watch.

Probably one of the most well-known vampires in history, the Dracula that the public knows and fears was initially made famous by Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel. Brought to the screen in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 film Bram Stoker’s Dracula, he embodies both terror and tragedy, blending the archetype of a monstrous villain with that of a tortured romantic figure. A tragic backstory reveals his transformation into a vampire that stems from the loss of his wife and his renunciation of God.
But after years of living this cursed existence, he’s at his core a predator who thrives on the blood of the living. Dracula uses his charm and hypnotic powers to seduce and control his victims, making him as alluring as he is terrifying. Much of his power lies in the mystery surrounding him, and he is shrouded in legends. Gary Oldman brings his sinister charm to life and plays him as a powerful and manipulative figure, one of the most memorable portrayals of this legendary vampire.

Count Orlok is a chilling and grotesque character who is one of the earliest cinematic representations of a vampire. Unlike the suave and charismatic vampires popularized by later media, he is monstrous and eerie, embodying fear and decay rather than seduction. Monstrous and predatory, this vampire is driven by the primal need to feed on human blood. He shows little humanity or empathy, acting purely on instinct and malice. His appearance, with his long clawed fingers and inhuman face, has been striking fear in viewers for nearly 100 years.

While 2024’s Nosferatu is one of the most anticipated horror films of the year, the original movie did not receive the same sort of reception.
The vampire in Nosferatu is a pure embodiment of horror. He is monstrous, alien, and unsettling. His character taps into primal fears, portraying the vampire as a predator to be feared. His shadowy silhouette on the screen perfectly encapsulates the terror he instills in his victims. A new cinematic version of the character arrived in 2024 by director Robert Eggers, with Bill Skarsgård bringing his own depiction of the legendary blood-sucker.
